Astonishingly, centuries before Jesus' birth, many of the events that occurred during His ministry were foretold. The prophets were stating what events would occur during the Messiah's ministry, yet Jesus fulfilled all of these prophecies.
We are told that the Messiah would come to preach the good news, and that He would declare that He was the Son of God. Infants would praise Him and He would be greeted with great rejoicing in Jerusalem. People would behold the Messiah as King, and He would be presented to Jerusalem riding on a donkey.
The prophets said that the Messiah would make a sudden appearance at the temple and elsewhere they stated that He would visit the second temple. It was also foretold that the Messiah would be angered by disrespect toward the temple, God would minister to the Messiah, and the Messiah would ask God for His inheritance.
These are very specific events that were to occur during the Messiah's arrival, and as we shall see, Jesus fulfilled even these very detailed occurrences, prophesied hundreds of years before He was born.
Prophecy
- "The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn," (Isaiah 61:1-2)Fulfillment - "The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 'The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.'
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying to them, 'Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.'" (Luke 4:17-21)
Prophecy
- "I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, 'You are my Son; today I have become your Father.'" (Psalms 2:7)Fulfillment - "Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, 'Do you believe in the Son of Man?'
'Who is he, sir?' the man asked. 'Tell me so that I may believe in him.'
Jesus said, 'You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.'" (John 9:35-37)
Prophecy
- "From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger." (Psalms 8:2)Fulfillment - "But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple area, 'Hosanna to the Son of David,' they were indignant.
'Do you hear what these children are saying?' they asked him.
'Yes,' replied Jesus, 'have you never read, 'From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise?'' " (Matthew 21:15-16)
Prophecy
- "Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey." (Zechariah 9:9)Fulfillment -
Prophecy
- "This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. I will shake all nations, and the desired of all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,' says the LORD Almighty. 'The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD Almighty. 'The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,' says the LORD Almighty. 'And in this place I will grant peace,' declares the LORD Almighty." (Haggai 2:6-9)Fulfillment - "Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: 'Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.'" (Luke 2:27-32)
Prophecy
- "'See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,' says the LORD Almighty." (Malachi 3:1)Fulfillment - "On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple area and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves" (Mark 11:15-16)
Prophecy
- "for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me." (Psalms 69:9)Fulfillment - "When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, 'Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!' His disciples remembered that it is written: 'Zeal for your house will consume me.'" (John 2:13-17)
Prophecy
- "I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles" (Isaiah 42:6)Fulfillment - (Spoken by Jesus) "The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him." (John 8:29)
Prophecy
- "Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession." (Psalms 2:8)Fulfillment - "I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name--the name you gave me--so that they may be one as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world." (John 17:4-24)
