Who Was Jesus?

The Bible tells us that God would have a son, and that His son would be the promised Messiah. Jesus referred to God as His Father continually throughout His ministry, and God referred to Jesus as His son, "In whom He was very pleased" (see ). Jesus is never referred to as a Son of God, but always as the Son of God. Adam is called the son of God (lower case) in the book of Luke, but only Jesus is always referred to as the Son of God (capitalized), because He is the one and only true Son of God. It is interesting that even Satan (see " ") and the demons that Jesus encountered (see " ", " " and " ") referred to Him by this name. They immediately knew exactly who Jesus was, and they feared Him because of the power He had over them. Many prophecies were validated in the fact that Jesus was the Son of God:

Prophecies -

Fulfillment - "As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.'" (Matthew 3:16-17)

Prophecies -

Fulfillment - "You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."

"'How will this be,' Mary asked the angel, 'since I am a virgin?'"

The angel answered, 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.'" (Luke 1:31-35)

Prophecy - "I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my love away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor. I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne will be established forever." (1st Chronicles 17:13-14)

Fulfillment - "'Father, glorify your name!' Then a voice came from heaven, 'I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.' The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

Jesus said, 'This voice was for your benefit, not mine.'" (John 12:28-30)

Prophecy - "He will call out to me, 'You are my Father, my God, the Rock my Savior.'" (Psalms 89:26)

Fulfillment - "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." (Matthew 11:27)

Prophecy - "Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him." (Psalms 2:12)

Fulfillment - "While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!'" (Matthew 17:5)

More than just the Messiah's identity was foretold by the prophets, they also gave clues as to the precise time that the Messiah would come. Click 'Next' to see these prophecies.
