What is Sin?

"Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness." 1st John 3:4

Simply put, sin is man's desire to do what is morally evil and goes against God's will, breaking His universal laws. The soul that sins is always conscious that his sin is intrinsically vile and polluting, and that it justly deserves punishment. Hence sin carries with it two inalienable characters, guilt and pollution. There is no doubt that sin exists. We all know when we?ve done something wrong, regardless of rules or laws; we've all had that feeling in the pit of our stomach. Just look at any toddler, too young to have learned the difference between right and wrong, yet they instinctively know when they've done something wrong. This knowledge exists in the very fabric of our soul and cannot realistically be disputed. But just knowing that sin exists is not enough; at least three specific questions are raised:

  • Why does sin exist?
  • Where did sin originate?
  • Can sin be reconciled?

"If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it." Genesis 4:7

The honest answer to the first question is simple, I don't know. No one knows why God allowed sin to enter the world. It is a mystery, and will remain a mystery until we join Him in heaven, at which time every mystery will be revealed. It is plain that for some reason God has permitted sin to enter this world and that is all we know. His permitting it, however, in no way makes God the author of sin. He has allowed it to exist, and it continues to exist. These two facts are indisputable and can not be ignored. Our lives literally depend on it.

"Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned; ...death reigned from the time of Adam" Romans 5:12,14

So God allowed sin to exist, but we did not have to embrace it. You probably know the story of Adam and Eve. The Bible says that they were the first human beings, from whom we are all descended. God created Adam from the dust of the ground, and Eve from one of Adam's ribs. Together they were given reign over all of the animals and lived in communion with God. He spoke with them face to face and walked with them throughout the garden. He only gave them one rule to follow; they could eat from any tree in the garden, including the tree of everlasting life, but they were not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. However, this one simple rule proved to be too much for man. Satan tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit and Adam followed suit. They chose to rebel against their creator; they chose sin. They were guilty of the sin of disbelief, virtually making God out to be a liar, and guilty of disobedience to a positive command. Therefore God banished them from the garden and condemned all of their posterity to sin and death. But, in His miraculous wisdom, God already had a plan in place to rescue us from that fate.

"So it is written: "The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven." 1st Corinthians 15:45-47

What most people do not realize is that Jesus was the second Adam. They were the only men in history to be born without sin; Adam born of the dust of the earth and Jesus born uniquely of a virgin. When Adam was created he was not condemned by sin, and there was no death. He was given an opportunity to live forever and replace Satan as ruler over the earth. But as we now know, he failed, and his failure introduced sin into our world and condemned mankind to physical death. (Satan, by the way, retained his rule as the 'prince of the power of the air', and he still reigns over the earth to this day).

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." Romans 3:23-24

Now, condemned to separation from God, or spiritual death, and the fact that we must face physical death, we are all in dire need of a savior. Jesus, the second Adam, did not fail. He was born free from sin and lived a perfect life. He never gave into temptation and His life was acceptable to God the Father as the atonement for our sin. He died as a sacrifice to rescue us from our sin, and to give us the opportunity to conquer spiritual death through Him.

"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory." Matthew 25:31

Three days after His physical death, Jesus rose from the dead, and in doing so, conquered spiritual death for all of us. Then, before ascending to rejoin God in heaven, He promised us that He would return again someday, and when He does, He will defeat Satan and rightfully claim His throne, to rule over the earth as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

"Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him." Romans 4:8

So, can sin be reconciled? Absolutely! By believing in Jesus Christ and accepting Him as your personal savior your sins can be forgiven; your soul can be cleansed, your spirit reborn, and your relationship with God re-established. But this can only be accomplished through God's grace. There is no other way.
