THE PILGRIM CONNECTION

Significantly the roots of this PORTER family line begins in Massachusetts as early as 1620 with the arrival of the Pilgrims at Plymouth. Twelve Pilgrim family surnames have been identified & documented as ancestors of this PORTER family line. Those Pilgrim surnames of interest include: Alden, Carpenter, Chilton, Cooke, Faunce, Hopkins, Morton, Mullins, Standish, Tomson, Warren & Winslow.





 THE GREAT MIGRATION

Between the years 1630 & 1650 some 4500 immigrants came to the shores of Massachusetts. These families, for the most part, were of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Some of them settled in the townships of Dedham, Hingham, Weymouth & Braintree. Many of these families later married, both paternally & maternally, into the RICHARD PORTER family line.
Paternal ancestral surnames of interest include: Ames, Barstow, Bisbee, Bourne, Byram, Chubbuck, Church, Decrow, Harlow, Hersey, Latham, Mendall, Poole, Record, Rogers, Stetson, Tilden, Tucker & West.
Maternal ancestral surnames of interest include: Belcher, Billings, Burrell, Pedman, Pratt, Reed, Smith, Thayer & Tower.



THE NOVA SCOTIA CONNECTION

During the mid 1750's "Foreign Protestants", some 1200 families crossed over from Prussia (Germany) and settled in Halifax & Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Those ancestral surnames of interest include: Conrad, Emoneau, Feindel, Wenzel, Wentzel & Wentzell.
Later, during the latter part of the 1770's, just prior to the American Revolution, a number of Massachusetts families, remaining loyal to the British Crown, migrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Those ancestral surnames of interest include:  Cottle, Crossman, Look, MacBean, Matthews, Presbury, Rogers, Schofield & West.
Still later in 1859 Janet MacBean, a young lady of 28 left her home in Inverness, Scotland to come to Nova Scotia to care for her brother, Alexander's motherless infant son. She met and married Henry Allen West, son of the above mentioned George. Their daughter Annie Matilda, married Calvin Porter.
