[356] From GBFA, p.5: "Jacob Barney was a farmer and a Baptist minister, interested in organizing Societies of that faith. This may have been the reason for his removal from Salem to Rehoboth some time after 1681. His children are all recorded at Salem; his will, dated July 20, 1692, names his wife and all the children save the first two Hannahs and son Jacob."

The statement about him being a Baptist minister has been repeated in nearly
all the compendiums; many of them also go on to state that he founded Baptist
churches in Charlestowne and many other places. But I HAVE NEVER FOUND ANY
EVIDENCE that this Jacob Barney was a minister. He is not mentioned in the
records of the early Baptist church in Massachusetts. There is a record of a
Jacob Barney being baptised in the Baptist church in Boston, but I rather think it might have been Jacob Sr.

The Barney family packed up and left Salem, selling all their property there in January 1691, just a few weeks prior to the beginning of the witchcraft
business in Salem. But I have found no actual connection between the
witchcraft persecutions and the decision to leave Salem. They went to
Rehoboth, then a part of Plymouth Colony.
