Davis papers sent by Lynda Schonover of St. Petersburg, Fla.: "Swansea was a sort of debatable border land or frontier ground given up to Baptists and such other sects as the Congregational Bretheren of the Bay thought unworthy of full fellowship, but not quite so bad as to deserve banishment to Rhode Island. Here in Swansea, where the Rev. John Myles had held forth a liberal fellowship to all professed Christian people, the Baptists found free toleration, and though Mr. Myles was dead, the inhabitants of the parish welcomed all such as he had been to their communion. Finding themselves at home among these people, Jacob Barney and his sons bought a tract of land, said to have been a mile square, in Rehoboth, lying upon the west side of Palmer's River and upon both sides of Torrey's Creek near the Swansea line. To this plantation Joseph Barney brought his young wife, Constance (Davis) from Haverhill. In this connection there can be hardly a doubt but that their first acquaintance was formed while both were living with their parents at Salem and Haverhill, respectively -- not distant neighbors in that time. Upon the northerly part of this farm Joseph and Constance (Davis) Barney lived and brought up a family as did their descendants, for two or more generations after them. Even yet upon a knoll between the cedar swamp and river on the old place are to be seen the grave mound of the family marked by rough head-stones, of which only one bears a legible inscription. "Anna, wife of Jacob Sanders, youngest daughter of Joseph and Constance Barney, died 1760, aged 47 years." On Sept. 4, 1719, Joseph and Constance united in fellowship with the First Baptist Church of Swansea, and were exemplay members thereof while they lived."
[646] marriage place: WFT #16:0123 says they md. 4 Sep 1692 in Rehoboth, Mass.
