FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome to the first net issue of Potter's Bar. It is intended that the newsletter will be more informative, and will take a more positive campaigning stance. In addition, it is intended that this newsletter will more readily. The previous 85 issues were available in printed form only and continue to be available in the new (or old for some of our older readers). Therefore I have kept the existing Issue Numbers
However, Potter's Bar is not aimed at CAMRA members alone. It should be of interest to any beer lover who wishes to resist the national trend towards nitro-keg and silly themed bars.
Along with the new format, there is also a new editor who already knows what a difficult job it will be to improve upon the standards set by previous editors, such as Mike Peterson, Ted Whitfield, Selwyn Brown, Ken Lee, Bill Derbyshire, Rob Shanks, Tony Dobson and, of the course, the last editor, branch chairman Clive Ameson.
This is my first effort at producing Potter's Bar, and there is an awful lot to learn, so please be patient, it will get better!

Letters
Dear Mr. Ameson,
You ask for my opinions on any of the pubs mentioned in Potter's Bar 85.
Not surprisingly, perhaps, most of them are unknown to me. Of those I do know, two deserve special mention:
The Railway Inn, Stafford: for good beer, good malt whisky, agreeable company, pleasant interior, and a reasonable view of the railway, I extend my complements and best wishes.
The Bird in Hand, Stafford: I went there a couple of times, several years ago, and found it acceptable: fairly noisy inside, but there was always the beer garden. So on one visit, I went out into the beer garden, to have a pint whilst listening to the bells (of St. Mary's...), I found that, since my previous visit, the beer garden had been wired for sound, and was now subjected to a relay of the juke box.
I finished my beer quickly and never went back.
