PUB NEWS
GLOBE REOPENS
The Globe at Goldenhill reopens on 9th April following a refurbishment programme, and promises to be a Real Ale treat as it has connections with the Packhorse at Longport. Hopefully, It will stock a similar range of beers to the Packhorse,
McDOG and PARTRIDGE
There is news that the Dog and Partridge at Sandyford is to be demolished to make way for a drive through McDonald's. A sad end to what was once a community pub.
PO to WETHERSPOON'S
Potter's Bar has been informed that the redundant Post Office building in Burslem is to become a new J.D. Wetherspoon's outlet. Good news for Burslem - it could do with something to brighten it up!
SWAN UPPING
The Swan, at Town End, Cheadle, has recently reopened. It's not known what beers are on offer (hopefully it's not keg or nitrokeg only - my apologies if it is!).
MILD HORSE
The Flying Horse in Leek now stocks Bateman's Mild.
OLD MANOR INN
The former Old Manor Inn, Manor Street, Fenton, is currently undergoing building work. A licence application in early March was successful, and Fenton drinkers are anxiously awaiting a reopening date. Did I say reopening? My sources tell me that it is at least thirty years since the last pints were served in the Old Manor, so hopefully it wont be too long before we can try it out!
No news of what beers will be available - once again, hopefully it won't be keg or nitrokeg only! Still, it'll be handy for a lie down next door anyway!
NEW FLORENCE
A brand new "Big Steak" pub has opened just off Lightwood Road, Longton, by the name of The New Florence. Beers available include Tetley's Bitter, Marston's Pedigree and Morland's Old Speckled Hen. It is a food and children orientated pub, with a huge "Wacky Warehouse" play barn at the front, and a children's play area at the side!
STILL POTTERING
The Potter King Street, Fenton, has recently been bought, and has benefited from an approx 10p per pint price reduction. It is now a free house, and it stocks Draught Bass, Worthington Bitter plus a guest ale.
3rd Packhorse Beer Festival Success
The Packhorse Inn at Longport (above) is certainly promoting the cause of Real Ale in good style, and may have up to 7 cask ales on the bar at a time, including the rare (for the Potteries) Caledonian range.
At Easter, the Packhorse opened its rear stable bar, erected a marquee in the courtyard, tapped an additional 20 cask ales from around the country, stocked up on Belgian, German and Czech beers, and had its third beer festival.
Says Landlord Keith, "I was a bit worried on Monday when one of my suppliers let me down, but when I rang "Simply Cask" they told me that 20 cask ales would be supplied and stillaged the same day."
Keith is now planning his fourth beer festival for September, and has promised not to clash with the Potteries premier event - the 19th CAMRA Stoke Beer Festival.
