PUB OF THE MONTH

GEORGE, ECCLESHALL

Anyone visiting the George in Eccleshall for the first time in ten years would hardly recognise the pub. It was originally called the George and Dragon and was dismissed in local beer guides as a "modern steak bar" and "the only pub in Eccleshall that does not sell real ale". Since taking on the pub several years ago Ged and Moyra Slater have put a considerable amount of thought, effort and money into improving all aspects of the large historic hostelry. It is now well decorated, with a traditional feel, and the large log fire is most welcome in winter months. Excellent food is served both in the lounge area and in the separate bistro, which has quite an imaginative menu and a midnight supper license. En-suite accommodation is offered in nine luxurious bedrooms.

BREWERY

For most visitors, however, the George's main attraction is the beer. Ged Slater established Eccleshall's first brewery for over a century in March 1995. It is housed behind the George in outbuildings, which have had to be extended to cope with the ever-growing demand for Slaters award winning brews. As brewery tap, the George stocks Slaters' full range, namely Bitter (3.6% a.b.v.), Original, Top Totty (both 4%), Premium (4.4%), Supreme (4.7%) and a seasonal beer (most recently the 3.8% Top Notch). One or two guest beers from other independent brewers and a traditional cider are also often on sale.

The George is situated in Castle Street, at the main crossroads in the centre of Eccleshall, and is open all day.
