Across The USA by Dodge

Chapter 20

Wichita (Kansas) was one of my favourite cities and if I had to live in the States it would be one of my first choices. It's a fairly large place with around 300,000 people but, just like the cliche, still has that feel of a country town. There were a number of interesting places I saw including the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Kirkpatrick Center, Old Cowtown and Dodge City.

The day I got there the temperature was 80 degrees which was the coldest day in history.

I stopped at Greensburg and climbed down the Big Well (the largest hand-dug well in the world) -- every town is famous for something! -- then continued across Kansas, the wheat fields and sunflowers an old Lobo song ringing in my head.

I visited Fort Dodge (which is where F Troop was based) then Dodge City and it's Boot Hill Museum, Gunfighter's Wax Museum and unbelievably the Kansas Teacher's Hall of Fame. That last one was free because nobody in the right mind would visit it otherwise.

After that was cattle country and endless feed lots which were rather on the nose, through towns like Ingalls and Garden City where I bought a giant pack of sunflower seeds then pointed the car towards the Colorado border.
