Tunis, is it the reminiscents of the French protectorate, which is still
expanding as the modern city. Or is it the suq, the old town, one of the Arab worlds best (as long as
you donīt want to shop handicrafts)?
The truth is somewhere in between, Tunis
is neither very Arab, nor African. It is not European either, even though
Tunisians might tell you so. Tunis is highly functional, effective, clean and is
mixing the old and the new, all at the same time, all over.

Left: In downtown Tunis, nobody should be in
doubt about the colonial past of Tunisia. Right: Tunis is fairly green, there
are parks spread around the whole city. Most are bigger than this of
course.

When entering Tunis keep your eyes open for the efficiency, the cleanliness, the lack of beggars, and all the women wearing modern garments. Depending on your preferences,

Left: The most popular place in Tunis is the
Avenue Bourgiba, which has big trees full of birds all along the pedestrian area
that makes up the core of it. Right: And the only religious building along the
Avenue Bourgiba, is the cathedral, just restored by Tunisian
authorities.

Next to that, you
will find yourself surrounded by people, but no Westerners. But more than
anything else, use your time in and out of the suq, stroll along the
vegetable stands, head into the meat and fish market (between the suq and
the railway station), and end up in almost any cafe, ordering Direct with three
sugar cubes. And do not forget sitting down, relaxing, looking at people,
telling quick moving young men to get lost, and start talking with everyone
else.
Continue with a visit of the old Islamic city of Tunis, the medina. This is one of seven UNESCO World Heritage sites in Tunisia.
you will visit the souk of it .Outside of the official, quality and price, controlled Artisanat (handicraft) shops, where everything from carpets to birdcages bears a price tag, and carpets a stamp of origin and caliber, shopping in Tunisia is definitely an art. Located in the old city (the Medina), the Souks offer a selection of objects of unsurpassed beauty and distinction , excellent arts and craft and traditional work. A sharp eye, nerves of steel, a show of disinterest and a good sense of humor will make shopping a real pleasure.
