Eddy Guerrero comes from a family heritage of wrestling. His father, Gory, is recognized as the founder of lucha libre and considered by many to be the greatest professional wrestler in Mexican history. His older brothers, Chavo, Mando and Hector all joined the "family business" as well, all of whom have had success in the industry.
And it was in El Paso, Texas where Eddy began training with his father in and out of the ring to achieve success. It wasn't until the late 80s, that the youngest Guerrero debuted in Mexico's EMLL promotion.
Over the span of a few years, he garnered a great deal of success competing in the tag team ranks with his brothers. In addition, he earned titles in the singles division of the promotion, wrestling under a mask as "Mascara Magician." But it wasn't until he moved to the AAA promotion, and took off his mask ,that his career really started to take off.
In a year of what could be described as no less than fantastic matches, 1993 saw some incredible feuds between Guerrero and guys like Dean Malenko, Chris Benoit, 2 Cold Scorpio and Jushin "Thunder" Liger. However, he had been splitting his time between Mexico and Japan, and it was in Japan that Eddy was once again placed under a mask and saw his career slide downhill. But Japan would nopt prove to be a fatal blow to Eddy's career.
While wrestling in Mexico, Eddy became part of one of the most hated factions in AAA history. The "Los Gringos Locos" were despised and fueded with all the promotions top stars. Along with Konnan, Art Barr, and Rad Radford, Guerrero was one of the most over "heels" in in Mexico.
After some misfortune saw Eddy without a job in AAA, he turned his sights to ECW. His talents won him ECW's TV Title the first night he was there, and as the champion, Eddy once again was fueding with Radical buddy Dean Malenko. To this day some of their matches are considered among the best in ECW history. Due to the tremendous success of both Eddy and Dean, the two future superstars were picked up by WCW in 1995. It is here that the public really got to see Eddy for the first time. Sort of.
Eddy worked in WCW for a few years, but was never really given the chance to shine. Possessing great mic skills, is was only in spurts that the fans got to hear what Eddy had to say. Many of the somewhat popular storylines were dropped and Guerrero was shoved to the back to allow older established stars like Hogan and Flair to stay in the spotlight. It was often the case that Eddy was removed from storylines with potential to angles that were absolute busts with the fans. Case in point the LWO.
Eddy was considered the leader of the LWO, where he was actually given some mic time, but the lack of interest in the story made it nearly impossible for Guerrero to get the idea off the ground. After a number of other instances where Eddy's talent was wasted, Eddy was unfortuneately involved in a serious car accident that many thought would spell the end of his career.
Amazingly Eddy bounced back in better shape than ever and was almost nearly healed while WCW was changing shape infront of him. Russo and Ferrara became the bookers, and potential for Guerrero seemed high. However just as quickly as they were hired on, Russo was demoted. Kevin Sullivan took over, resulting in Eddy, Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko and Perry Saturn among others to voice their dissapproval. Doping so led to the Radicals introduction into the WWF.
With the world of bad backstage politics behind him, Eddy's potential in the WWF is tremendous, and there is no doubt he will go on to fulfill the expectations that everyone has always had for him. Many are betting that even though he is out with a dislocated elbow, he will be the first Radical to achieve gold in the WWF. We'll just have to wait and see.
