Rescue workers surround Dale Earnhardt's Chevrolet after he was involved in what proved to be a fatal crash.
Autopsy shows Earnhardt died of blunt force to head
Dale Earnhardt died Sunday, February 18th. Dale Earnhardt was my favorite racer. I am in disbelief that this could happen. Earnhardt slammed into the wall on the final turn while he was struggling to gain position. Earnhardt died instantly of severe head injuries. They had to cut him out of his race car. Dale was an awesome NASCAR racer who has won the Winston cup series 7 times. Dale has one Daytona 34 times and has a total of 76 career wins. Even with his skills, Dale was an awesome individual and will be missed by many fans, friends, and family. Especially his son, Dale Earnhardt Jr.
``NASCAR has lost its greatest driver ever, and I personally have lost a great friend,'' NASCAR chairman Bill France said.
Earnhardt, running fourth, grazed Sterling Marlin's car, crashed into the wall at the high-banked fourth turn going about 180 mph, and was smacked hard by Ken Schrader.
"This is understandably the toughest announcement I've ever had to make. We've lost Dale Earnhardt," NASCAR president Mike Helton said.
Marlin becomes the target of threats
Marlin was one of the key players in what many motorsports insiders have called "a racing accident" on the final lap of the Daytona 500 Sunday, a crash that claimed the life of Earnhardt, the seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion.
A large pack of cars chased leaders Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt Jr. through the 2.5-mile trioval's third and fourth turns. Earnhardt was trying to hold on to the third position when his car was nudged in the rear at least twice by Marlin's Dodge. Waltrip went on to win the race in his debut performance with Earnhardt's race team.
Earnhardt's Belt Broke

(Katrillion) -- Investigators say that Dale Earnhardt's lap belt was broken after his crash during the final lap of the Daytona 500. If it didn't snap, he might have survived.
Investigators don't know when or why the lap belt broke. They speculate that Earnhardt's body may have been thrown forward and to the right, causing his chin to hit the steering wheel. Doctors say this could be the cause of the massive head trauma that killed the driver.
The discovery has come as a shock to many in the NASCAR industry, as there have been no reports of similar incidents in the 52-year history of the sport. This would explain, however, why Earnhardt's crash, which seemed relatively inconsequential, caused his death, while Tony Stewart flipped over 10 times and was able to walk away.
More information on this development is expected to filter out as the investigation continues.
Racing close together at speeds approaching 200 mph, cars are bound to make contact.
