| Welcome
back to another edition of Pain Tolerance. This week’s column will focus
mainly on the King of the Ring matches and results, I didn’t like the pay
per view, but I didn’t hate it, it was pretty much an average WWF pay per
view. Also I’d like to talk a bit about the WWF using the CEO position
as an angle, in their main feud and finally, I’d just like to shoot at
the mouth a bit and to end it all off, polling results as well as a new
poll.
Now,
King of the Ring was last night, it was a so-so pay per view, a lot of
people that I have talked to since the pay per view are distraught about
the WWF having quick first round matches, well I can understand why since
they needed to get through a lot of the matches, and I’m sure the wrestlers
that went all the way, didn’t want to have to engage in any serious bumps,
to store their stamina up. I was a surprised quite a bit to see Kane pull
of the victory against Big Show in the first round, but it looks like the
WWF will be setting up Kane Vs. Big Show. When Holly got on the mic backstage
on the pay per view, it was a sad thing to see. You could see him reaching
for words, but all that came out was some useless babble. Road Dogg
Vs. Chyna was pretty slow at the start since Chyna dominated, and she isn’t
the greatest to carry a match, but she did show some decent wrestling holds,
and the WWF is doing a good job of putting her over as one of the guys.
Maybe the WWF is giving the thought of her in the Women’s division another
chance, since the WWF is low on experienced female wrestlers, and she’s
no longer the biggest female, and it does look like Nicole Bass will be
taking an active role in the female division. If Shawn Michaels was ever
able to wrestle again, it would be great to see a Triple H Vs. HBK feud.
Now, Hardy Boyz Vs. The Brood, that spear from the second rope was without
a doubt the highlight of the night. It’s good to see the WWF is going to
push these two young groups since both of them are deserving of a Tag Title
reign. Power Vs. Speed and Agility, is what the Acoltyes Vs. Hardy Boyz
will turn out to be, and I’m looking forward to it. Now, the KOTR final,
it was a pretty good match put on by Bad Ass and X-Pac, the fame-ass-er
from the ropes for the finish was a nice site. Why does the WWF not "Crown"
the King of the Ring? The last one was Triple H in 1997, 1998 they didn’t
crown Shamrock and again this year they didn’t. The crowning just tops
the tournament off I guess. Look what the crowning did for Steve Austin
in 1996? It gave him the opportunity to announce his famous quote, and
probably the most marketable gimmick in wrestling. A guy like Billy Gunn
needs a chance like that to bring something new to the table, since week
after week he runs the same lines down, the line he usually does isn’t
even entertaining anymore, he sounds like a broken record player, and you’d
think since he abandoned DX, he’d get a new slogan. Rock Vs. Undertaker
for the world title was yet again, another so-so match up, in one of the
three main events for KOTR it was a pretty good showing from two of the
top talent that grace the WWF ring. The ending was kind of screwed up,
but at least it made sense, most likely tonight we’ll find out why Triple
H knocked The Rock out, and I don’t think it was to keep the Corporate
Ministry on top, I think it’s to keep the title on the Taker’s waist so
he can get a shot at the Undertaker and prove to everyone that he is main
event worthy. Will this lead to the dismantling of the Corporate Ministry
from with in the machine? Most likely not, since the Vince Vs. Austin feud
is far from over, and I don’t think Undertaker is through yet, neither
is The Rock. He’ll be wanting his revenge on the Taker and Triple H sometime
down the road. With that said, now on to the last match of the evening,
Austin Vs. The McMahon’s. Everyone I’ve talked to leading up to KOTR thought
this match was going to be pure crap since the McMahon feud with Austin
has been going on for so long now, well look back at St. Valentine’s Massacre,
remember the bumps Vince took? For having only one legitimate wrestler
in this match, this was a damn good match. The atmosphere and objects around
the ring could have been used better, for instance the ladders at the entrance
way, if they were able to take it, they should have attempted a stunner
on top of them, but that would screw either of their backs up so I can
understand why they didn’t do it. Anyway, now with the ending, what did
you expect Austin to win? Sorry but it isn’t WCW where the President changes
every pay per view. It was good to see the McMahon’s win, and it was obvious
they would have to lose cheaply some how, and in my opinion the WWF played
it out pretty well. Now with that ending, they furthered McMahon as heel,
the furthered Austin as a face and they set up the next road block in the
McMahon Vs. Austin feud. Who was tinkering around with the cord supporting
the briefcase? Was it HBK, was it Triple H, was it a new wrestler or a
new name to be placed in this feud? Whoever it is, I’d look for them to
be unveiled maybe tonight or next week on RAW. Some people were stating
it could be a set up for when Jericho. Two reasons why I disagree with
that, first the WWF wouldn’t set up an angle like that and hold it off
till late August when Jericho would be able to make his entrance. Secondly,
Jericho hasn’t dotted his I’s and crossed his T’s on a contract with the
WWF, so until he announces it on his site, or until he’s on WWF programming,
I wouldn’t believe it. There’s always a chance he could stay with the WCW,
or maybe he would go back to his roots, and sign with the federation that
brought him to the game, ECW.
Now,
with the CEO angle in the WWF. Sure you could say the WWF is ripping WCW
off for this angle (Which isn’t much of an angle, honestly.) But yet again,
really did the WWF rip them off, or did the WWF do this angle to rub it
in the WCW’s face? WCW has been looking for a way to heat the Angle of
Flair and Bischoff and Piper now, for so long, now all of a sudden the
WWF walks in takes this angle, puts it in play for two weeks and boom they
end it in an entertaining way, seems like the WWF did this angle just to
show they can run an angle out better.
Now,
a lot of rumors are going around that Jericho has turned down multi-million
down contracts from WCW, the recent has been $2.5 Million per year, plus
merchandising. Now, for how long has WCW been holding Jericho down, and
now all of a sudden they offer him a 2.5 million dollar offer which is
double almost what some guys like Nash, Hall, Sting and others, and would
set him just a bit below Hart and Hogan. Why would WCW all of a sudden
do this? Look at how they are going about with Goldberg? They won’t even
give him 1million and, I dread to say this, but he is the top draw in WCW,
for the past month there’s been Goldberg chants and they have been REAL,
not piped in like before, his merchandise is a top seller and he is most
likely on the cover of any magazine doing a story about WCW. So therefore,
I doubt the WCW would offer Jericho that type of money. Secondly where
did the "X-Calibur" name come from? If Jericho was to sign a contract with
any federation, I think the best place to look would be his own official
site, hear it straight from him.
Now
onto the poll. I got a lot of responses and I’d like to thank everyone
who voted. Before I post some responses I must say, some I agreed with,
some I didn’t but all opinion are welcome.

My
final four would be Edge, Christian, either of the Hardy Boyz, and "Badd
Ass" Billy Gunn

I
would have Triple H definitely. the others would be the rock, kane, and
Billy Gunn. those I think are the top heavyweights in the WWF in terms
of skill.

BRISCO,
MARK HENRY, BAD ASS, VISCERA - I THINK THAT WOULD MAKE SOME GOOD MATCHES.

Thanks
to everyone who sent theirs in. Now, my choices would have been Chyna,
Val Venis Edge, and D-Lo Brown, since those four would have put on some
entertaining matches, especially Edge.
Well,
that’s it for last week’s poll, now for this week’s poll. "If you were
in charge of signing new talent for WCW to rebuild their image, and you
could sign one wrestler not employed by WCW at the moment who would that
wrestler or manager or valet be?" Remember your trying to rebuild WCW’s
image, and the federation is starting to go down hill majorly, and are
desperately in need of a good sold main eventer that will help out. Send
your choices to [email protected] have a nice night everyone and thanks
for reading. |
