King Arthur

Arthur is the son of King Uther Pendragon & Igraine of Cornwall. When he was born he was taken by Merlin and raised by Ector. When he was 15 he was chosen as King. The more romantic legends saying the choice was made by him drawing the Magical Sword Excalibur from the stone. Something no on else was able to do for 15 years. Engraved on Excalibur were the words "Whosoever shall draw this sword for the stone is the true born King of all England." Isn't it amazing how tales get told!

Legend covers that King Arthur came by the thrown through winning the kingship in tournament. That the sword that Arthur drew from the stone was not Excalibur, but a sword that had no special name. The manner in which Excalibur came to be carried at Arthur's waist is quite widely covered. Having fought and almost been killed by Sir Pellinore, during which fight Arthur broke the sword he had removed from the stone, Merlin took Arthur to the shore of a vast lake and there told him that he would receive a sword that he would carry as a mark of his kingship and authority. This bemused Arthur, thought he trusted Merlin implicitly, he followed his advise. He rowed out into the lake, a hand lifted the sword out of the water and presented it in its scabbard to Arthur. Arthur returned to the shore, was than asked by Merlin which he preferred, the sword or scabbard? After a moment of though, Arthur replied the sword. Merlin chided him, saying that the scabbard was worth ten times the sword and while he carried the scabbard he would never lose any blood, no matter how badly the wound was.

When Arthur was crowned King, it led to a rebellion by II barons, which I would like to add, he put down. After Arthur defeated the Saxons at Lincoln, at Celidon Wood and at Bath, with the help of King Hoel of Brittany, (his cousin or possibly nephew), they put down the Scots, Picts and Irish in Moray, and toured Loch Lomond. Next they raised the seige of Yord, in which Arthur restored the city to its former glory. He returned the lands to the three Yorkish princes, Lot, Urian and Auguselus.

Having restored the entire kingdom, Arthur took the beautiful Guinevere, daughter of King Leodegrance of Cameliard, Ward of Duke Cador. A women of noble Roman descent.

After the marriage, Arthur was summoned to Rome by Lucius Hiberius to answer the charge of having attacked the empire. With 183,00 men, Arthur crossed to France and marched south. Arthur was about to march on Rome when he received news that his nephew Mordred, son of Lot though actually his son by Morgause, had usurped the throne and taken Queen Guinevere as his mistress. Some accounts, say that Arthur defeated Hiberius and became emperor himself.

Hurrying home, Arthur landed at Richborough, where he fought and defeated Mordred. At the battle of Auguselus, Mordred was defeated by Arthur again. It was at this battle that legend tells the death of Sir Gawain's.

Gawain spoke to Arthur in a dream and told him that if he were to fight the following day, both he and Mordred would be slain. If he waited, Sir Lancelot and all his knights would come to his aid within the month. Arthur called his two most trusted knight, the brothers Sir Bedivere & Sir Lucan, and charged them with making the turse with Mordred. Both sides agreed. Fourteen knights from both sides would meet on the combat field to sigh the treaty. An adder slithered from the bushes and bit one of the knights on the foot. Drawing his sword to kill the snake, the opposing armies, seeing the sword glinting in the sunlight, cried treachery and the battle began again.

Over the slaughter, King Arthur noticed Mordred leaning on his sword among the pile of bloody bodies. Arthur rushed him and killed him by driving a lace through him with one dingle lunge. As Mordred fell to the ground, his sword struck Arthur a mortal blow. Sir Lucan and Dedivere carried the dying Arthur through the combat field. Arthur asked Bedivere to take Excalibur and throw it into a near by lake. Bedivere took the sword but could not throw it into the lake. He hid it behind a tree. When Arthur asked him what he saw he told Arthur he saw nothing but the wind and waves on the water. Arthur knew he was lying. He once more told Bedivere to take the sword to the lake as he commanded. This time Bedivere did as he was told, he hurled Excalibur out over the lake and as it fell towards the water, a hand clad in white smite rose caught it. He told Arthur what he had seen.

Arthur satisfied that his orders had been followed, told Bedivere to take him down to the waters edge, where a barge drew alongside. There were a number of ladies weeping on this barge. According to Geoffrey of Momouth, they were Morgan Le Fay and six of her eight sisters. Bedivere laid King Arthur on the barge, which sailed away for the isle of Avalon, so that his wounds might heal. The barge was steered by Barinthus, a mysterious ancient Celtic sea or water deity. He was accompanied by both Merlin and the magically conceived bard Taliesin.

Arthur gave the crown to his cousin Constantine, son of Cador, Duke of Cornwall.
