REVELATIONS

St. Albans' Art Gallery
These images are from a series based on the Revelations of St.John of Patmos. They are taken directly from the Bible verses, and depict the visions of St. John in a wild underground cartoon style. I think such a style befits the enormously weird visions of this particularly wild prophet. I don't much believe in St. John or his visions anymore as it has been two thousand long years and nothing of the sort he described has ever been seen. Still it is a powerful work of poetic art and prophetic dreaming. And the impact on me since childhood was always great. So here are the visions as I interpret them: First off, "The Angel of the Seventh Seal," who's face shone "like the sun" and who bore a rainbow for a crown...Who stops time completely with a wave of his mighty hand.
WAR! First Horseman of the Apocalypse!
War is here depicted in black and white/ pen and ink, as a helmed warrior riding easily through the ravages he causes and the hurt and destruction which pleases him so much. Decorated with his many medals and awards for his slaughters, and battle scarred, yet undying. A cautionary figure in a world weary of hate and fear.
DEATH, The Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse!
Death is seen here eagerly weilding it's sharp saber which cuts down innocent and guilty alike. Surrounding it are the rubble of everything mankind holds dear. Nuclear Holocaust is it's fondest invention, for it kills and continues to kill for millennia. Death of course plays no favorites and rides for anyone who would utilize his powers. Any country, any society, any mob, any evil person, or anyone who seeks revenge or retribution. Yet in the end this crazed monster will be defeated...or so say the scriptures.
