News of the sudden Imperial "retaliation" against a peaceful Vulcan
outpost spread swiftly by subspace relay, and it so happened that at least
one starship was in a postion to intercept the Imperials on their return
journey.

An alarm went off on the bridge, and with a sudden lurch, the ISD
was back in realspace, as were its two compantion ships and escorts. "Why
have we dropped from lightspeed?" demanded Captain Andropov. "Automatic
safety overide, sir" responded an unhappy looking underling. "The ship's
sensors detected a sudden mass shadow ahead!" This should not have happened,
as they all knew quite well, since the return course had been carefully
plotted to avoid any massive stellar objects. "Well, I don't see anything
out there!" snarled Andropov sceptically, as he glanced out of the main
window. "There's not a star system within lightyears. Where's this mass
shadow now, eh?" And indeed, there was now nothing detectable with planet-size
mass, as they were where Imperial ships are seldom found, deep in interstellar
space. Fearing sudden demotion or worse, the bridge crew frantically searched
all available sensor readings for anything that might offer a hint of an
explanation.

Feeling the forcefield around him, a flare of irritation sprang
in Mel. 'Where are the controls for something like this?' he thought. Noticing
Mech's opening of the capsule with the spider, a plan began to form in
Mel's mind. When he had examined the lab, he had employed the use of internal
nanos. He hadn't ever called them back, as they might yet prove useful.
With an undetectable signal, the nanos reacted, converging on the spider,
riding on air currents and the rare occasional dust particle in the purified
athmosphere. Only a few made it. No matter, thought Mel. All it takes is
one. Inside the spider, the nanos raced, analyzing the structure, learning
it's functions, and waiting for further orders....

While Mech contracted the force field to further confine Mel, Jadesfire
watched through Elisia's eyes. It was slightly disturbing, really, as she
was capable of seeing a little beyond the human visual spectra in both
directions. Not significant, but off-putting nonetheless, it certainly
screwed with Jadesfire's sense of color. Still, Jadesfire reviewed the
security tapes of Mel's activites during their 'abscence.' His work in
the lab had not gone unnoticed, she noticed, as she felt Mech's irriation
at the disarray. Comparing the before and after surveillance was a tedious
task, involving comparing databases of what the ship's computer said was
there in both cases, and recognizing individual parts. Looking at her hands,
Jadesfire was glad she had ordered deconstruction and reverse engineering
of the computer interfaces on the Far Star. Once installed, she wouldn't
have a need for technical middlemen to research her data, or to suffer
terminal boredom from doing it herself. It would all be instant access,
under direct, conscious control. Finally, she had a list of items that
had been altered or taken altogether. Some neural analysis scanners, a
background radiation reader, a power amplifier. This didn't make much sense,
still, it made her wary. It had irritated her that Elisia's consciousness
had found a way of escaping her control. While it made controlling the
body much easier, Jadesfire also didn't have the information Elisia possessed
in her mind, either, nor could she get at it. No matter, Mech would find
out whatever it was Mel had done, and conteract it, and, if it's a weapon,
perhaps find a use for it on the ship. All would reveal itself in time...

*On the bridge of the ghaytanHa', TDK oversees the repair efforts
to his ship. All the Woodlice engineers diligently working on his left
while all the chrome spiders can be see running around on his right. Progress
was being made despite the segregation, however. Most systems were back
online and were nearly at full capacity again. Then, one of the Ble Pea's
security guards walked on the bridge followed by two Humans. "TDK, do you
know these two?" TDK turned around and saw Dark Commie and Scorpion under
armed escort.* What did they do? *"Apparently they stowed away in our cargo
hold. They were quite well hidden until a BFG blast took out a full week's
supply of KFC." TDK immediately looked over at Scorpion who immediately
shouted out in his own defense. "He tied my shoelaces together!"* Alright,
I'll take 'em with me when I go. Throw 'em in the brig.

Mel's brain was racing. One of his nanos had managed to relay a
signal that the nanotech of the spider could recieve. After a few confusing
minutes of deciding on communication protocols, Mel was communicating with
a spider, and by extension, Spidernet. Preparing what he had to say, he
started... 'Members of Spidernet, hear me....'

*Crossing all 32 fingers, a glass spider plugs in the last part..
And the emergency transmitter begins to function. Sending a low powered
radio distress signal, they can only hope that someone will pick it up.
Spidernet uses the quantum-comm, and would probably not be monitoring the
radio waves. Powered by the wind driven leaves, the transmitter coconut
up in the tree on Spider Island sends out a constant plea for help...*

Mel spoke of himself, who he represented. He told them of Infinity.
He told them of their mission here. All this to prelude his explanation
for impersonating TDK all that time ago so he could formally apologize.
Then, he got to the clincher. 'The lady Jadesfire, the one undead... she
inhabits my sister, my friend, Elisia, forcing her to do her dark will.
You will agree that Jadesfire cannot be allowed to continue this way. She
causes, and will cause harm to many people, this you cannot deny,' he said,
appealing to their internal protetiveness of humanity, and all other life
forms, 'and if I am forced to remain here, she may yet learn something
diabolical from my mind or systems to cause even more great harm. Help
me escape. Please, the Galaxy demands that you act...' and Mel was silent.
The communication had been draining, taking almost fifteen minutes to send
up the message via one single nano. Looking over his performance, Mel thought
it was a little over the top, but perhaps necessary to get their attention.
He focused his full faculties to his surroundings again, noting that everyone
had seemingly 'left' again. Not to give them a show, Mel simply stood there,
in his force field bubble, still as a Buddha...

His efforts were rewarded a few minutes later as his nano in the
spide relayed some information... Coordinates in the hall. Several thousand
microwave channels he would need to access, and a communications array
setup. Sitting down now inside the forcefield, he prepared for the moment,
a time at night when few officers would be about and only the security
cams would pick him up...

Several million minds, of one mind. Several million semi-sentient
guerrelous neurons, racing through internal networked databanks. Confirmation
achieved. SpiderNet was assigned to the EDA and in extension, to protect
humanity. Jadesfire is no longer a member of EDA, hence she is no longer
within the SpiderNet assistance category. A sentient is in danger, with
perhaps more to be in danger. Deeply ingrained programming kicks in, raising
the priority to rescue Mel. The spider by which the contact was made relays
the decision via nano to Mel. Then, a detailed plan of action was sent
along as well, with information learned about Mel's component architecture
from studies of the 'bullets' retrieved from Duker's body and left in the
BoP. Surrepticiously, spiders move into the areas surrounding the room,
positioning themselves at precise locations behind the wall panels.
