Welcome
to my site on the World Wide Web... This is where I babble on and on about
myself until you're thinking, "Who does this
guy think he is?"
Well, I'm James Cartrell Fox Sr. and I've been stationed all over the world. The United States Army has been my home for over 17 years. I'm a Sergeant First Class, an NCO in the Aviation Maintenance career field. These pages are the stories of my adventure... My travels have taken me to over 20 countries, from Iceland to Saudi Arabia. To be honest with you... I think it's been a series of unique adventures... maybe you will too. When I was fifteen-years old, I attended Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) in Southern Alabama, Daleville Hight School. After two years at the school, I realized that becoming a soldier was what I wanted to do. (Big surprize,eh?) At age 17, soon to be completing my junior year of high school, I talked with an Army recruiter. As it turned out, I was eligible to join the U.S. Army Reserves, so I did! The summer before my senior year, I attended Basic Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. I returned to school and during the year, I served one weekend a month with my new Army Reserve unit, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 791st Transportation Battalion, Grand Rapids, Michigan. After graduation from Howe Military School in June, 1981, I went off to the Administrative Specialist Course at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. At the time I was a Private First Class. After three years in the Reserves, I decided to join the Regular Army. My test scores were good, so I had a wide variety of jobs to choose from. I decided on "Broadcast Journalist", just like in the movie, "Good Morning, Viet Nam". I completedthe required voice audition and waited for the reply. Soon I was off to Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis, Indiana. I attended the Basic Broadcaster Course at the Defense Information School. In October 1983, I graduated and was promoted to the rank of Specialist Four. I was on my way to Jump School. Jump School was a big challenge. It was something I had always wanted to do. I arrived as a new member of the 82nd Airborne Division in December 1983. I learned how to soldier at Bragg. I made Specialist Five in June 1985. In October of that same year, the Army eliminated that rank and I became a "Sergeant". Here are some stories from my time at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In January 1986, I was on the move again. This time, I was on orders for Fort Clayton, Panama and the Southern Command Network. The Army and Air Force Hometown News Service at Kelly Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas was my next destination. I arrived for duty in March 1989. Korea, the "Land of the Morning Calm", became my next assignment in November 1991. I learned a lot here, about myself and my career. I was assigned to American Forces Korea Network, AFKN in Seoul, Korea for two years. In December 1993, I was on orders for Germany. Finally, the much talked about American Forces Network... Its the biggest network in the Armed Forces Radio & Television Service. I worked at the Headquarters in Frankfurt for 14 months. In January 1995, the Commander asked me to take my first important management role. I was appointed Station Manager of AFN Nuernberg. The station was closing and it was my job to move the people and equipment to an installation 60 miles east. On September 4, 1995, American Forces Network Bavaria in Vilseck, Germany, became the newest permanent affiliate in the network. This is where I currently serve. Now the time is ripe to consider my next assignment. I've put in an application for "Recruiter Duty". Let's see what happens. 1997 All Rights Reserved. |
