Secondary missions include the provisions of air transport to ground troops when needed, the coordination of civil and military aviation activities, and the conduct of technical training for civil aviation specialists.

The chief of air staff commands the air force. He is Air Cheif Marshal Abbas Khattak. There are three defense districts :

  1. North
  2. Central
  3. South
The Pakistan Air Force began acquiring modern jet aircraft in 1956. Most of these aircraft were supplied by the United States, but numbers have also been obtained from Great Britian, France, and PRC. Air force training was modeled after that of the British Royal Air Force until 1956, when many officers and airmen began to attend courses in the United States. Training installations in Pakistan provide courses for pilots and navigators, and technical trade schools are available for both officers and airmen.

Pakistan Air force operates Air Force College at Risalpur, Peshawar; Air Force Staff College, Karachi; and the Air Force College of Aeronautical Engineering, Karachi for academic training.
