"Yeah, Sam's a great guy. You using Mitch
for drums?"
“No.” He paused, probably for effect. “Vinnie
Vanetti.”
“What?”
We both loved Vinnie Vanetti. He was legendary.
He’d been a member of one of the most influential American rock bands of
the early 60’s. Both Carmine and I grew up listening to his
music.
“How did you manage that?” I asked.
“Well, we hooked up during the tour and he’s interested.
He’s with a band called Running on Empty, but they’re on the verge of breaking
up. They’ve got a standing gig at The Inner Circle, in the
village, on Fridays. Vinnie thinks that if I can get this band together
in time, we can have their slot.”
“Jesus, you haven’t wasted any time have you? You’ve been
home, what, all of three days?”
Carmine laughed. “Well, I made some of the calls
from the road.”
“Friday night? At The Inner Circle? Isn’t
that down on Christopher Street?”
