Please keep in mind that if a child exhibits some of these indicators that
does not prove that they are a victim of neglect, this list is meant to be a guideline. If you know of a child that repeadtly shows several of these signs they
might be a victim of neglect and the proper authorities should be notified. The first, and most important step that you should take is to use your best judgement of the situation. If you are unsure consult other people.
Indicators of Physical Neglect
Basic needs are obviously not being met:
(food, shelter, clothing)
Failure to thrive:
(underweight, unusually small for age)
Consistent hunger
Poor hygiene
Inappropriate dress for season/weather
Consistent lack of supervision
Unattended physical problems or medical needs
Abandonment
Behavioral Indicators of Physical Neglect
Begging for or stealing food
Unusally early arrival to or constantly late departure from school
Frequent visits to the school nurse
Difficulty with vision or hearing
Poor coordination
Often tired or falling asleep in class
Takes on adult roles and responsibilities
Substance abuse
Acting out behavior
Child verbalizes a lack of care-taking
