COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES:
TO GIVE STUDENTS AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE BASIC THEORETICAL PRINCIPLES OF HUMAN COMMUNICATION, AND ENABLE STUDENTS TO APPLY THOSE PRINCIPLES IN THEIR LIVES.   

NOTE: IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU
COME TO CLASS ON TIME EVERY DAY  CLASS IS HELD.

NO EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS IN THIS CLASS.

ATTENDANCE:
YOU ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND CLASS EVERY SCHEDULED DAY.
IF YOU MISS CLASS IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO SEEK OUT HANDOUTS, ASSIGNMENTS, AND NOTES, ETC.
YOUR LAB INSTRUCTOR WILL TAKE ROLL EVERY LAB PERIOD.
ANY STUDENT HAVING PERFECT ATTENDANCE IN LAB WILL RECEIVE FIVE (5) BONUS POINTS (NOT PERCENTAGE POINTS) ADDED TO HIS/HER FINAL GRADE.  PERFECT ATTENDANCE MEANS NEVER MISSING CLASS FOR ANY REASON, AND IT MEANS BEING IN CLASS WHEN THE ROLL IS DISTRIBUTED, WHICH IS NEAR THE BEGINNING OF CLASS.
SPEAKING ORDER FOR THE ONE SPEECH WILL BE SET IN ADVANCE.. IF YOU MISS YOUR TURN, YOUR GRADE WILL BE REDUCED 20% OF POINTS POSSIBLE PER CLASS PERIOD THE SPEECH IS NOT READY. 

EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE ARE:  DOCUMENTED ILLNESS, JURY  DUTY, DIRE FAMILY EMERGENCY.  WHATEVER THE REASON, DOCUMENTATION MUST BE PROVIDED.  STUDENT ORGANIZATIONAL AND JOB-RELATED CONCERNS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE REASONS FOR MISSING YOUR TURN.

- IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR SPEECH VIDEOTAPED, AS A TEACHING INSTRUMENT OR IF YOU HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT HOW YOUR SPEECH IS EVALUATED, LET YOUR LAB INSTRUCTOR KNOW WHEN SPEAKING ORDER IS SET.
- IF YOU WILL MISS CLASS DUE TO SCHOOL-SANCTIONED ACTIVITIES, PLEASE LET YOUR LAB INSTRUCTOR KNOW PRIOR TO THE ABSENCE, WHICH MUST BE DOCUMENTED BY THE PROPER SOURCE.
- IF YOU MISS AN EXAM, REGARDLESS OF THE REASON, I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO GIVE YOU ANOTHER EXAM, WHICH MAY BE IN ESSAY FORMAT.

GRADES OF INCOMPLETE WILL ONLY BE GIVEN IN EXTREME HARDSHIP CONDITIONS AND THEN AT THE
INSTRUCTOR'S DISCRETION.

CLASS GUIDELINES
TURN OFF ALL CELL PHONES, PAGERS, FAXES, LAWNMOWERS, OR ANY OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICE BEFORE ENTERING THE CLASSROOM.

NEVER ENTER THE CLASSROOM IF ONE OF YOUR CLASSMATES IS GIVING A SPEECH.  WAIT UNTIL HE/SHE HAS FINISHED BEFORE ENTERING. GIVE THE SPEAKER YOUR FULL ATTENTION WHILE HE/SHE IS SPEAKING.

YOU ARE PROHIBITED FROM TELLING ME OR YOUR LAB INSTRUCTOR WHAT GRADE YOU "NEED" FROM THIS COURSE.

THE FINAL COMPREHENSIVE EXAM WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY, MAY 7, FROM 8:00 UNTIL 10:00.  BE SURE AND BE ON TIME.  IF YOU ARE LATE ARRIVING AND ONE OF YOUR CLASSMATES HAS ALREADY FINISHED THE EXAM AND LEFT, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE THE EXAM, BUT WILL BE GIVEN A COMPREHENSIVE ESSAY EXAM.

DO NOT MAKE TRAVEL OR PERSONAL PLANS THAT INTERFERE WITH THE FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE, AS I WILL NOT GIVE IT EARLIER.
