Setting up a network

Setting up a Network

There are many ways to setting up an IPX compatible network if you have multiple computers. If you don't then you can't set up one. Well if you do then all you need is about $200 to $300 to buy the network cards and software and cables. It is much more expensive if you buy this stuff seperately, but you can get a really good deal if you buy what is called a starter pack. What this is is a pack of about 2-4 ethernet network cards and a couple cables and a network box. This may all sound complicated to you now, but really it is very simple. All you have to do is install the cards(which is the hardest step) and then it's down hill from there.
  • Now to install the ethernet cards you first have to open up your computer and ground yourself by touching the power source. After this has been done in the back of you computer/computers punch open a slot by pushing out the metal tab that is in there. Most cards will be either in PCI os ISA form it really doesn't matter which. Next after you've punched out the metal tab, slip the card through the slit and attach the bottom of the card up with the ISA/PCI slot which it will go in. This should secure the card in place on your motherboard. Finally put the cover back on your PC and that is it with the card installation.
  • Now after the card installation just hook up the cords to the open port in the back of the card. This will complete the cord installation.
  • Now after the cord installation comes the network box installation(the easiest of all). All you have to do is hook up the other cord ending to the slot on the box. After all the cords have been connected simply plug-in the box to an electrical jack. Now your network is live and working.
  • Finally you must install the software. If you have Windows 95 then when you boot up Windows 95 should stop the boot to tell you you have a newtwork installed. They will then ask for the software which came with the network and you will then put the CD/Disk in and follow the setup program. After the setup program has run your network should be installed and working properly. Almost all multi-player games support IPX networks. So you should have no compatibility problems.
