The
name change in the DSM-IV from MPD to DID reflects an attempt on the part of the
American Psychiatric Association to defuse some of the heightened emotionality
that surrounds this controversial diagnosis. The name change was made, in
part, to respond to critics who have correctly emphasized that only one person
inhabits each body.
