As you already might guess after reading the title, this page is about Cheating in Quake. Itīs not about commands like "god" or "impulse 9", but it will show you how to use the bugs and features of Netquake and Quakeworld most efficiently, even after the Release of version 2.30 of Quakeworld.
If you donīt understand why someone helps other people to
cheat think about how Quake evolved. As Quake was released
everybody played the same game, back then all needed to win was
skill and a good ping. But then some people tried to tweak Quake
a little bit to get an advantage over the other players. They set
there fov to higher numbers than 90, wrote complex aliases, and
tried everything to get more fps (low resolution, low texture
quality..). The first cheats were born and soon it was clear that
those people would win against an even skilled opponent just
because of their settings. On big lan-events other people saw
those strange setups and used them too, sometimes even added
something new. And they shared the configurations with a lot of
people, so that soon it was normal to play with these. The cheats
evolved, model modifications came up, the first aimbots were used
and more and more physic bugs discovered.
And today there are players who have disadvantages because they
donīt know as many cheats as other.
So to get back to "fair" Quake there are 2
possibilities, either everybody has to stop using cheats from one
day to the other or everybody has to know how to use cheats and
also use them. The first one wonīt happen unless the software
doesnīt allow cheats anymore, but as Zoid said QW 2.30 will be
the last official version if there are no bugs. So we would have
to wait for the sourcecode to be released so that projects like
the Quake Info Pool
can make a cheat free game out of it. Unfortunately this wonīt
be before the end of 1999, quoting John Carmack.
But until then Quake will be dead if cheating goes on like this,
so I decided to get a bit more fairness back into the game by
making all the cheats I know of accessible for every Quake
player.
I donīt like cheating myself, but because I am a more or less
professional player I have to use at least the cheats everyone
else uses to have a chance. If I get mailbombed or if someone
attacks me personally (because they want to fight that asshole
who makes the people cheat), this page will be shut down. In my
opinion this would be a big loss, because no other page like this
exists or at least I didnīt find it.
One final thing to say:
There are many opinions about what cheating is (almost as many as
there are players), but most lack of a descent reason. I donīt
claim to have the perfect one, but it has the best argument I
know of and is used in every other game.
In my opinion a cheat is something which wasnīt intended to be
used by the programmers (even a rocket jump or many console
commands like fov). If you think this is crap or if you have a
better argument just write me. You wouldnīt be the first one (-:
Of course Quake wouldnīt be as fair as a strategy game even if
everyone had this opinion, because of ping, packet loss, fps, but
it would be as fair as possible. And more important all these
"natural" disadvantages can be easily recognized (even
the fps with ".who fps" using cheapo), so that
everybody sees how fair a game is. But you never know what cheats
someone uses.
