2.20.01Move out soldiers - Commandos 2 Preview
Commandos 2 is a PC port of, well, Commandos 2. The premise behind Commandos 2 is this: you complete missions--in environments such as, a Japanese aircraft carrier, a French prison, the heart of the Third Reich, a Northern European submarine installation, the headquarters of the Japanese army, and other locations throughout WWII--with a half-dozen elite soldiers--Tiny the Green Beret, Duke the Sniper, Fins the Marine, Inferno the Sapper (a soldier who disposes of bombs), Tread the Driver, and Spooky the Spy--all from Commandos, as well as, three new characters. These 3 new characters are: the seductress Natasha who plays a double role of Spy and Sniper, Lopin the Thief, and the most eccentric of them all, Whisky the Dog (he's a bull terrier). If you are wondering how in the world you are you supposed to use this small dog as an instrument of war, worry no more. Whisky will be used as a slave...er I mean servant...er transportation device, yes that's it. His job will be to transport items between characters who aren't in close proximity to one another. Each member will be able to call Whisky (with a dog whistle which only Whisky, or any other dog can hear), and then equip him with weapons or supplies to give to other characters. Whisky will be a very valuable asset, because you will be able to get valuable items such as grenades and medical supplies, past the enemy and to your comrades without any interference; the enemy won't pay much attention to a (cute) bull terrier. Would you? I didn't think so. Anyway, on to gameplay. All of the action is real-time and is viewed from an isometric angle. Eidos has come up with a solution to the indoor isometric view problems. You can rotate and zoom in or out the focus of the camera to different angles for better viewing access of items or characters which are blocked. Another cool facet of gameplay is that you can gaze through almost every single window in the game, this will help enable you to see the location of characters, items, or anything else, much better. When I fist heard this, I thought it would be accomplished just like in Jagged Alliance 2--the wall or window you wanted to gaze through, would become transparent--but Eidos is taking a new approach. When a character gazes through a window, a small screen pops up at the top of the monitor or television, that shows the interior of the building. Did I mention that the missions are behind enemy lines and involve a lot of strategy and 10 steps ahead thinking? I didn't? So I'll do so now: The missions are behind enemy lines and involve a lot of thinking for current and subsequent moves (that just caused about 80% of the readers to leave), patience (there goes another 8%), and a high tolerance to pressing the reset button or load option, over and over again (there goes another 5%); so that leaves 7% of the prospected consumers of this game to keep on reading. Here are the new aspects of the game from Eidos' (Commandos 2 publisher) website:
Here are screenshots of what the game should look like when it is released:
Note: The pics are from the PC version.
Well, that's all for this preview for now. If anymore information or screenshots (hopefully of the Dreamcast version) surface, as usual, I'll be right on it. Before I leave, I can't forget to give SegaDojo, Eidos and SwirlVision their props for the screenshots and information in this preview.
