Is he Goring competition...

As I write this, George W. Bush has declared himself President Elect, Al Gore is contesting the results of the election in court and Americans are losing interest in the election rapidly. This situation is bad, and the results of the election are clear: the people of the United States of America want Al Gore to be their president, and so do I.

Bush is to become the next President not because the majority of the people voted for him, but because the majority of the Electoral College will vote for him. The Electoral College is an archaic system, which may have served its purpose long ago, but does not anymore. While over 200,000 more people voted for Gore, Bush still won the electoral votes.

The founding fathers formed the Electoral College because they felt the people would not be able to know enough about a candidate from a different area to make a good decision. However, in this day of television and the Internet, anyone can know enough to vote conscientiously. The Electoral College says to me that the people are not trusted to make good decisions, which is contrary to the basis of our country.

Political office is just like any other job; no one would choose a landscaper with five years of experience over someone with more than twenty; however, that is what will happen if Bush wins the election. Gore has been in Congress, the Senate and, more importantly, he has been Vice President of the United States for the past eight years. It would seem that no one could be more qualified than he.

Bush’s only experience in politics is less than two terms as governor of Texas. His father may also have been President, but that does not qualify him for the position. My dad works for Taylor Pork Roll and I am the first to admit: I do not know a thing about the meat production industry. Bush is not automatically qualified just because his father was President.

Some would say that Bush is uncorrupted by his little experience in political office. I am not sure that politics necessarily corrupts, but I do know that it is important to have experience in any job, let alone the presidency.

It is obvious that Al Gore has won this election. The people have spoken, and it should be the policy of America to listen to them. After all, the light of democracy is what illuminates this great nation.
