Sophomore officers prepare for new challenges

After a week of fierce campaigning, the officers of the sophomore class election were announced on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

“I really did it, I really won," Anthony Kanakis, sophomore class treasurer said, "I wanted it so bad and now I have it.”

The five officers that will be leading the sophomore class this year are, President Kevin Hopper, Vice-President Jenn Sullivan, Secretary Amy Keeling, Treasurer Kanakis and Historian Bob Ireland.
The elected officers have already completed the task of defeating over 27 other sophomores for these positions, but now have a lot of hard work ahead of them.

“I know that it is going to take a lot of work to get everything done well, but if the five of us work together, we can do it,” Keeling said.
The officers have many events to organize over the next year with the help of their class adviser, Shelia Royds.

These events include the sophomore class ring night, scheduled for January, and also the biggest social event for the sophomores, the Sophomore Dinner Dance, which will be held in early spring.
“I want to see how much fun it will be and I can’t wait for the experiences,” Sullivan said. The officers will need to recruit many volunteers to help transform Gym 3 into a beautiful dance hall. The participation of everyone is a huge necessity.

“I want the students to be happier, have more fun in school, and get involved more,” Ireland said.
Royds thinks that this year will be a great learning experience for the five officers.

She is looking forward to working with, not only the newly elected officers, but the sophomore class as a whole.

“I want to guide the five of them so that they can learn what it is like to get students involved," Royds said. "School is a lot of fun if you get involved.”
In May, the officers will have to campaign again if they want to be remain in office for their junior year. Any sophomore interested at that time can campaign for a chance to become a junior class officer for the 2001-2002 school year.

“I just want to have a fun, exciting year and make the dance a lot of fun for all the students who go," Hopper said, "I want to try to get all the sophomores to participate in school activities.”

The officers are very proud of their accomplishments and hope to continue to succeed throughout the year. They are thankful to be representing the sophomore class.
