When the Skins started this season, the only
people that expected them to go anywhere were the members of the
team, the coaching staff, and the dedicated fans. Throughout the
season, they shocked non-believers and finished the regular season
with a record of 17 wins and six losses, as well as the Suburban
One League Patriot Division championship.
At the start of the district playoffs, the Skins
were seeded seventh. In the first round they were matched up with
the 26th seeded Ridley Green Raiders, who had a record of 14wins
and 11 losses.
Ridley was fired up behind the two bus loads of
fans that came to Neshaminy to watch the game. But the Skins
were too much. The Skins clamped down on the Green Raiders
with a tough defense, helping them pull away with a 66-47 victory.
Senior Sherman Brittingham had a game high of 26 points in the win.
Next up for the Skins was the 10th seeded
Spring Ford Rams. The Skins built up an 18 point lead and
managed to fend off the Rams and rally down the stretch to pull
out a 63-58 win.
Sherman Brittingham scored 26 points in a second
consecutive game. However, Coach Joe Blair gave much of the credit
to junior Jamar Brittingham. He was sent to defend Springfords
best scorer, Mike Block, and held him to 16 points.
After winning the previous two games, the Skins
needed to win only one of their next three to advance to districts.
The team hadnt lost three games in a row throughout the entire
season.
The first of the three games was against the second
seeded team of Hatboro-Horsham. The Skins put up a good fight
but just couldnt hold on in the long run. They still had two
more chances to move into the state competition.
Their next opponent was Lower Marion. Despite an
impressive game by junior Trevor Deeter, Lower Marion battled back
to take the lead behind 66" senior center Kevin Farley.
They finished with a 73-64 win, leaving the Skins with a do
or die situation in their next game.
In their final game, the Skins faced off against
West Chester East still seeking the one win needed to enter into
the state tournament. Missed opportunities for the Skins in
the fourth quarter took the game into overtime. The Skins
put up a good fight but this heartbreak ended with a 59-56 score,
in favor of West Chester East, ending the Skins magical season.
"It was a season of achievement by a committed
and skilled team," said Blair. "And I thought it was a
testimony of what real teamwork can accomplish when you don't care
about who gets the credit."
For many members of the team, this was their last
season. Bryan Lawton, Sherman Brittingham, Craig Robinson, Brandon
Ettinger, Mark Tingle, Matt McCaughey, Jay Rosnick, and Rob Nieves
are all seniros and will all be graduating this year. Returning
players that will need to step up for the 'Skins include juniors
Trevor Deeter, Jamar Brittingham, Brian Brophy, Justin Edwards,
and sophomore Ryan Giblin. Despite this many team members leaving,
the 'Skins will prove to be tough competition next season.
