Windows 98 PPP/Dial-Up Networking Setup

Advanced Dial-Up Connection Configuration

You should only be here if your ISP requires you to enter specific DNS (Domain Name Server) entries, or if you have an account with a static IP address.  Most ISPs dynamically provide this information when you log in - if yours does, you do NOT need to make the changes listed below.  You should only make the changes below if your ISP provided you with an IP address and/or DNS server entries.

At this point, you should have already created a Dial-Up Networking connection icon in the Dial-Up Networking folder.   Go into that folder by double-clicking My Computer, then double-clicking Dial-Up Networking.  Once in there, highlight the connection you wish to work with, and then right-click and select Properties.

A panel with tabs will appear, looking much like this:

Click on the Server Types tab, and you'll see:

Generally, you can (and probably should) un-check the NetBEUI and IPX/SPX Compatible boxes under "Allowed network protocols", but it isn't required.  Click on the "TCP/IP Settings" button, and you'll see this panel:

If your ISP gave you a specific IP address, click the "Specify an IP Address" radio button and enter the address they gave you.  Additionally, if they gave you DNS server entries, click the "Specify name server addresses" radio button and enter those as well.

Once you have them entered, click the OK button, and continue clicking OK until you are back at the Dial-Up Networking folder.  You can now continue with Logging in using a Dial-Up Networking Connection.
