"Ark computer give us ability to transform into Earthen vehicles, machinery, weapons... and animals. Stupid computer!"--Grimlock, TRANSFORMERS U.K. #265
I would love to explain how this repaint came
about, but I honestly don't know. I had bought a second TM2 Dinobot
after I broke a talon-cord on the first one, and since I obviously couldn't
sell the old one, I figured I'd kitbash it. Given that Dinobot's first
toy got repainted into Grimlock a few years ago, I figured it was as fitting
a fate as any for the new version.
I had to make some slight modifications to the
toy before I began painting him. For one, as I said, I had snapped
off one of the cables on his velociraptor claw. I decided to glue it
to his wrist instead of back on the claw itself; that way, at least his claws
would close like they were designed to. I also had to whittle away
at the bumps on his lower component after discovering that folding the pelvis
up during transformation would scrape the paint off. Finally, I swapped
his Predacon spark crystal with Sonar's, whom I had already painted into
TM2 Cyclonus, and scraped away the
existing insignia until it disappeared. I draw an Autobot symbol in
its place.
As always, I disassembled him in order to repaint
his parts. While drawing a new color model for him, I decided
that all the transmetalized purple parts would become gold (in addition to
some other parts like the dinosaur mode neck and "toes"). I got pretty
lucky in that I was more or less able to keep Grimlock's original color scheme
in both modes, even though his transformation is radically different from
the TM2 Dinobot toy. I think it is kinda cool that TM2 Grimlock does
still have an opening "cockpit" in his back, though.
I know the scans look like crap, so you'll just
have to deal with it until I get the latest roll of snail film developed.
Of course, if someone wants to donate a digital camera, no objections
here...
