Air fares were insanely low at the beginning of 1999! Even to Europe. You just had to travel before the end of March. I asked several friends if and where they'd like to go, and Jim (my rocketry partner) and Lynne took me up on the spur of the moment vacation.
We decided on Paris. I'd been there twice before, so I got to play tour guide. I speak only enough french to ask directions and order food, but I try, and Parisians aren't sick of tourists yet, so we got along fine.
Paris has the most user friendly subway system on the planet & there is history everywhere you walk or look. If you ever have the chance, go!
