The lift capsule keeps right on flying up the shaft.  If you don't get out soon, you will be shot into space.  You take a quick look at the laser pistol in your hand, and figure out what went wrong.  Both of the power setting knobs were off.  This gives you an idea.  You could blow open the top of the lift capsule and climb out, or you could shoot a hole in the bottom and make a jump for it.

    If you climb out the top, you'll still have to jump off the lift to try to get to safety.  At the top of the shaft, there might be something to grab onto.  But you might get sucked into space.

    If you jump out of the bottom of the lift, you can grab onto the access ladder if you are lucky.  But you might not be able to hang onto the ladder.

    No matter what way you go, you'll have to time it to make the jump, and you'll have to grab onto something.  You grit your teeth, then turn the laser pistol on.  Then you turn the power knobs all the way up, hoping it will be enough to blow open an escape route out of the lift capsule.  Then you aim your laser pistol...
