Click on the ball next to the text to re-read the text. Have the child point out any they know and to read them to you. Click on each word to see if they are correct. Pick out individual words and have the child guess them. Again, see if they are correct. Praise all attempts.
Read a sentence and leave a pause for a particular word. Have the child guess the word, using letter sounds and picture clues for hints. Start off with nouns and then work on other words. Have the child guess the word and then click on it to see if they are correct.
Have the child choose three objects. Walk away while the child explores these, telling the child that you will ask about them when you come back. On your return, ask the child to tell you what each of the objects will do when you click them. Gradually increase the number of objects until the child can explore the whole page.
When student have trouble predicting what will happen, or describing something, try and find a physical object similar to the object on the computer. We were looking at the bathroom page, trying to guess what the shower would do. The student I was working with was having trouble telling me what happens with a shower, so we went to the school shower and investigated. I have found this really effective for developing language concepts.
