Putting it Together

We used a roll of brown wrapping paper as a base and used craft glue to attach the various squares. A good thing to do is to lay out the squares first and see if you can achieve a balance of colour and shape. After the glue had dried, black oil markers were used to outline squares.

Through our experience with the colour mat, we knew the width that we could safely make our mat and still have it fit through the laminator. Check with your schools laminator before you lay out your design.

We again used velcro tabs on the back of them mat. This ensured that it would not slide over our carpet. Without some sort of fastening to the floor, this mat may be unsafe for students to walk over.

Activities using the number mat

Jump on a number and then find it's partner.
Jump around the mat landing on the numbers in order.
Place appropriate numbers of objects on appropriate squares (e.g. 5 counters on Number 5).
