Teddy Bears

picture of collaged teddy bear featuring coloured wool

This activity was designed by my teaching partner, Terressa Searle. We used some brown wool (unspun) and other fibres to make these teddies. Firstly we found a picture of a bear that we could photocopy (we respect copyright) and enlarge. If you do not have a bear picture handy, they are fairly easy to draw.

Our students fingerpainted some craft glue onto the cardboard bears and then spread the wool over the bears. Goggle-eyes were later glued on. Bows, hats or other clothing may be added. Also, the bears could be coloured or painted before gluing. This activity did not take very long for the students to do and they were very satisfied with the results.

We like to experiment with different materials as our students tend to be tactile defensive. Using fingers to apply the glue and using a variety of collage materials gives our students a chance to experience different textures and helps them develop an awareness of their fingers and hands.

Skills - finger painting, cutting
Concepts - covering, soft, sticky, colour
Language - this activity tied in with our "Fairy Tales" theme.
