History
The Hemingways began with the summer of Survivor and James Robertson and Ryan Walker as roommates on Oxford St. in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Fueled by terrible jobs, two really smokin' neighbors, and copious amounts of beer, Walker writes some songs that don't fit in with the style of his band at the time - The Lewinskys. He plays them for Robertson on an acoustic, who then nods his approval and writes lyrics that don't fit into the style of his band - The Setbacks. Walker suggests finding a guitar player and (luckily) the next night, Robertson sees Ryan Frizzell at a party. They went to high school together and they discuss The Lillingtons, Dillinger Four, and how crazy the hostess of the party is. Robertson extends an invitation to practice and the result is instantly inflammatory. Determined to breathe life into an increasingly stagnant music scene, The Hemingways continue their progression at Area 52 studios in Halifax, where they share a practice space with local rock devils BUCKETTRUCK. Buckettruck has more Marshalls that you could shake a stick at, while The Hemingways have a homemade speaker that uses a Pringles can as a tweeter. For the record, we would prefer the Marshalls.
Things are progressing smoothly, and the local scenesters and promoters are hypnotized by the sounds emanating from The Hemingways' instruments, and the result is sharing a bill with the legendary Weakerthans for only their second show EVER. In a bizarre twist, one of the attendees was Larry Livermore, the infamous founder of Lookout! Records who quietly gives his approval, applause and five dollars. Things are snowballing to perfection, when Walker throws the boys a twist and moves back to The Valley.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
But failure is not an option on this mission. The Hemingways soldier on, and are sometimes augmented by Dave Brown, drummer for hire who played for The Setbacks with Robertson, when Walker can't make it in for practice. The song writing process continues and Francis Hall, of local punk legends Dead Red, expresses a desire to record the band's debut EP at his Evil Eye Productions. The record is recorded at Boogaloo productions, (drums) Francis' bedroom, (guitars, bass) Robertson's Mom's house, (vocals) and a giant warehouse in Dartmouth (Vocals) on New Year's Eve Day with no heat. The result is simultaneously provocative and throat-grabbing. The agents are in place and the plan unfolds May 21st, 2002. Be sure to identify yourself - don't be mistaken for the enemy. Keep the airwaves open - you will be receiving further instructions. Good Luck.
