Viridian City has a Pokémon Mart, a Pokémon Center and a Gym. Gyms are where Pokémon trainers usually hang out, but this one is strangely empty. When you visit other towns, you'll be able to challenge local trainers, but for now, you'll have to be content with just looking around.

2. My Pokemon needs Help!
If you ever need help, the Pokémon Center will be the place to go. There are branch offices in most cities, and they'll provide your Pokémon with free medical treatment. You'll also be able to use their computers to access your PC at home, Professor Oak's PC, and Someone's PC. You can use these PCs to store extra items and Pokémon, and to receive an evaluation on your progress from Professor Oak. You can carry only six Pokémon at a time.

1. Oak Special Package
The first time you visit the Pokémon Mart in Viridian City, you won't actually be able to buy anything. The Pokémon Mart clerk will give you a package to take to Professor Oak. Deliver the package to receive a Pokédex.

The Pokédex is a portable computer that you can use to store your data files on all the Pokémon you've seen or captured. Now return to Viridian City and buy some Poké Balls. If you plan on staying in the area between Pallet Town and Viridian City to build experience, don't bother buying any special medicines just yet. Once you decide to head north to Pewter City, buy at least a couple of Antidotes (which will cure any Poison) for the road.

 3. Working Out your Pokemon
There is a mysterious gym in Veridian, but you won't be able to get in until you beat all other 7 Gyms.
