Junior Olympics 2000:
J2
standout Dan Skold swept the two individual races with a winning margin
of 15 seconds in the 5km skate. Dan skied a very fast 11:22.3 for
the 4.9 km course. In the classic race, Dan won in a come-from-behind
squeaker for a 3 second margin.
Already
well-known in the midwest, Lindsey Weier also established herself
as a skier to watch at the national level with win in the 4.9 km girl's
classic. She and coach Kevin Brochman had formulated a pre-race plan
of starting out fast but controlled and being with the leaders at
the 2km split, then winning the race on the down hill section.
Lindsey
was 1 second out of first at the 2km mark and won on the downhill
with a strong double pole. Lindsey won by 3 seconds over Intermountain
star Kristina Trygsted who is ranked top-15 in the country. Also posting
top ten results were perennial scorer Kristen Fairman in the OJ class
and impressive J2 newcomer Lindsay Williams. Skold and Weier join
several other BWNP athletes who have won at Junior Olympics in the
past including afore-mentioned triple gold medalist Kristen Fairman
who won both classic and skate and was on the winning relay in 1997,
Peter Tollefson who won the 5km classic in 1997 and Colleen Flaherty
who won the 5km skate race at the 1998 Junior Olympics at McCall,
Idaho.

In
the skate race we scored 86 points. Alaska Stars led the way with
102, we finished 2nd closely followed by Statton with 85, Bridger
84, Gold 2002 80, Fairbanks Ski Club 76, Sun Valley 61, East high
school 48, Park City Ski Club 38 and Berkshire had 33.
In
the Sprint race... well, we need work on that. We finished with 49
points and this allowed some other clubs to pass us up for total points.

67, Bridger 59.
Excluding
the relays, our club scored the 3rd highest point total behind Alaskan
