Detective Inspector Scott was very happy. His vacation had come at last. He had spent the day traveling toward a small hunting camp in Saskatchewan, Canada. First a plane had taken him to Regina, the capital city. Now he sat with some other hunters in the back of a big car. Tomorrow, he knew, he'd be out in the woods. He smelled into the mountain air as the cool wind blew against his cheek. He'd shoot all the deer that the law allowed . Then there'd be a big dinner at the camp. And after dinner, he'd swap stories with other hunters around the fireplace. He had a clear picture of the scene in his mind. It was late at night when the car finally arrived at the hunting camp. There had been a bad accident near the camp. One of the hunters. a man named Wylie, had shot and killed his friend Otto Moore. Thinking he might be of some help, Inspector Scott introduced himself to Wylie. Wylie sat by the fire in the lodge, still dressed in his hunting clothes He seemed half-dead himself. His gun lay across his knees. "When Moore hadn't returned to camp by nine o'clock, I got worried," Wylie explained. "He didn't know these mountains well. There wasn't a star out and it was dark, so I decided to look for him. We're ten miles from anyone, you know." Wylie took a deep breath and continued. "Well, I looked for Moore for a long time. About an hour, maybe. 1 remember wondering how long my flashlight batteries would last. 1 was coming up out of a rocky valley when 1 saw a pair of eyes shining at me." "How far away?" Wylie shrugged. "About the distance across this room." "Were the eyes moving?" Scott asked. "No," said Wylie. "They were perfectly stationary . I called twice, and got no answer. 1 thought it was a mountain lion. I fired my gun." "Go ahead." Wylie shuddered. "Imagine my horror when I reached the spot. I had nearly blown off Moore's head. A terrible experience." Scott waited till Wyiie raised his eyes from the floor. "And what did you do then?" "What could I do?" Wylie returned. "He was too far away to carry back to camp. 1 came back alone by the shortest route I could." "How far from camp did you find him?" "About half a mile." "Mind if I look at your gun?" "Not at all." Wylie handed it over. "H'mmm. A European type. Had it long?" "No, it's almost new." "Why did you murder Moore?" Scott suddenly demanded. "Because I'm sure you did it!!!"

Wylie Shivered. He knew he was done for.
