Alice Paul, Warrior for Women's Rights

Without the tireless energy and devotion of
Alice Paul, I am not sure I would be a
voter today!
Certainly she is one big reason
women get to vote in America.

When I think of Alice Paul, I get
goosebumps...
Where did she get the courage?
Where did she get the courage?
(Compared to her I am a WIMP)

All women owe her so much...and yet,
most of us know very little about her.
I did not for a long time,
which is why I wanted to do this page.

Alice Paul was born in Moorestown, New Jersey,
in 1885, into a Quaker family.
She was graduated from Swarthmore in 1905
and went on to do graduate work in New York City.
From there she went to England.

From 1906 to 1909, Alice Paul worked in a
settlement house in London,
was jailed on three occasions for
suffragist actions.
She learned a lot about politics then.

Back in the United States, she took her Ph.D.
from the University of Pennsylvania in 1912.
This year she also became involed in the
National American Suffrage Association,
becoming its congressional committee chairperson.

But Alice Paul was more 'militant' than most of
the Association members...impatient for women's rights!
She helped to found the
Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage in 1913.
Later this merged, in 1917,
to form The National Woman's Party.

Alice Paul lived and breathed women's rights.
Her house near the capital in Washington, D.C.
is a joy to visit.
Please visit it if you go to Washington.
From this house she tirelessly demonstrated
in front of the White House and Woodrow Wilson...
but it was not until 1920 that women
got the VOTE.

What a day that was for Alice Paul,
what a day !!!!!

The rest of her life, Alice Paul devoted to
the ERA, The Equal Rights Amendment.
In 1923 she introduced the first ERA to Congress.
She was never able to understand why all women
did not completely support the ERA.
Unfortunately the ERA has yet to be ratified.
However, Alice Paul did get an Equal Rights Affirmation
in the Preamble to the United Nations Charter.

Alice Paul was active in politics until
her death in 1977.
