Gloria Steinem...Sister, Beside Us

I can still remember the first time I saw
Gloria Steinem on television speaking...
This happened simply by chance.
Those of you who have not heard her speak
have missed a spiritual experience
in Womanhood.

She really cares what happens to women.
Listening to her, I realized I was a woman,
not a man,
I realized I was a person, a real person.
I don't think I realized that before
I heard her speak...
So few people put that in words.

During college, Gloria began to write,
become involved in civil rights.
She had lived with her mother for many years,
tried to take care of her...
From experiencing her mother's problems so acutely,
Gloria Steinem probably learned that all women
cannot help themselves,
that women need help and support, real love,
each other's respect.

In the late 1960's Steinem became important in
The Woman's Movement, and became known as a major
feminist, which was a new word then.
So was 'Ms'...which previously meant 'manuscript',
but now meant a woman in her own right,
not Miss or Mrs.
Gloria Steinem co-founded MS Magazine in 197l.
She remains a contributing editor today.

Many people have blamed Gloria Steinem for
a multitude of sins she has not committed,
simply because she is a 'feminist.'
During the recent Clinton scandals, when she did not
withdraw her support from the Clintons,
she was criticized for not taking up for women!
She did not see that Monica Lewinsky or Paula Jones
were discriminated against.
Discrimination is a enormous issue to Steinem.

There is no doubt in my own mind that Gloria Steinem
would come to the defense of a woman discriminated against.
But we must remember, her power is limited.
Certainly she has given more than most women to other women
and their solving their problems.
We cannot expect her to solve the problems of women today.

Here are some of her achievements:
1971- Co-covener of the National Women's Political Caucus

1972- helped found MS Foundation for Women

Founding member of Coalition of Labor Union Women

1983 - published OUTRAGEOUS ACTS AND EVERYDAY REBELLIONS

1992 REVOLUTION FROM WITHIN: A BOOK ON SELF-ESTEEM

Ms Steinem has never married and lives alone.
She has been able to take care of her mother.
She is an activist today, a lasting legacy of inspiration
to all women...
She is Sister, Sister Beside Us.
