Anne Rice, Daughter of the Dark

Anne Rice was born in New Orleans, Louisiana,
at Mercy Hospital, October 4, 1941,
a Libra born on The Day of the Incorrigible.

It is said she was born Howard Allen O'Brien,
named so after her father Howard,
but on her first day of school, she told the nuns
her name was'Anne'...
it has been Anne ever since.
She was the second of four daughters.

Her mother Katherine is said to have been a
permissive mother, also a drinker. She died July,1956.
Anne was devastated by her Mother's death.
She was fourteen when this happened. In 1958,
her father remarried and moved the family to
Richardson, Texas.

At Richardson High School, Anne met Stan Rice,
who was a year younger than she.
They became fast friends. Both were very active students.
Upon graduation, Ann went to Texas Women's College in 1959.
Anne moved to San Francisco State University, but
on October 14,1961 Anne married Stan Rice in Texas.
They moved to San Francisco, both earning their
bachelors degrees. Anne's is in Political Science.

September 21, 1966, Anne had a baby girl, Michele.
Stan was teaching and writing poetry, and Anne wrote
'Interview With the Vampire', a short story
that would one day change her life forever.

In 1970, they were told Michele had leukemia.
Michele died August 5, 1972.
It is reported that the next few years the Rices
mourned and drank, far too much.
However, both continued to write.

'Interview With the Vampire' turned into a novel in 1973,
was rejected by one publisher, then
was published in 1976 by Knopf.
Paramount paid Anne quite a lot for film rights,
a ten year option.
With this money the Rices were able to travel.
They went to Europe and Egypt.
In 1977, on March 11, Christopher Rice was born.

Anne wanted to move back to New Orleans.
They bought 1239 First Street in the Garden District
of New Orleans in 1989.
This is a very special, old area of New Orleans.
Since then, Ann Rice's fame and popularity have
blossomed. She is very well known all over the world.

Have you read THE MUMMY?
Her vampire series?
Anne Rice brings creatures of the dark to life,
creatures of the past...
they come alive and have being in her books,
tempt us to believe in the supernatural.
Her characters are likeable.
She is a very unusual woman,
probably the most unusual writer in America.
