What is the 'Year 2000 Bug'?
On January 1, 2000 a new millenium begins and as many people believe, so will a lot of problems for computer owners and users around the world.
A scenario of how the bug could affect you: 5 minutes after midnight on January 1, 2000, you place a call from Atlanta to a friend in Los Angeles, where it's still 1999. If the telephone company's computer system is not year 2000 compliant, then you will be billed for a call lasting 99 years.
A serious problem exists in many computers and programs in use today. It is left over from the earliest days of computing, when machines had very limited memory storage capacities. To save space, only the last two digits of a year were used when doing date calculations. At the time, this seemed quite reasonable since the turn of the century was three decades away. Many of these machines and programs are still in use today. In addition, an incredible amount of data using two digit years has been accumulated and is also still in use. In other words, many facets of our lives rely on computers. The two digit years only work if you assume that the first two digits are ' 19 '. In the year 2000, that assumption is no longer true. The "Year 2000 Bug" is a very serious issue. Many important calculations are based on two digit dates, and when these calculations become unreliable, there will be many serious consequences. Some businesses may go bankrupt because of the computer problems that will occur when New Year's Day 2000 AD rolls around. It is possible in most cases to fix the problem. The time to start doing something about it is NOW.
