T urabian is a writing style based, in part, on the fourteenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style. Designed by Kate L. Turabian, in 1937, her manual, entitled A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, is considered one of the basic reference guides for both undergraduate and graduate students in a variety of disciplines. Turabian was the University of Chicago Dissertation Secretary from 1930 to 1958. During her employment at the University of Chicago, Turabian read and commented on more than eleven thousand theses and dissertations. At the age of 94, Turabian died shortly after the fiftieth anniversary edition of her manual was published. Carrying on Turabian's tradition, John Grossman and Alice Bennett continue to edit and to revise Turabian's manual in concert with updates to The Chicago Manual of Style.
