Angel Sanctuary, by Kaori Yuki,
10 vol. Angels, Apocalypse, Forbidden Love Story, Mystery.
A complicated story about a reincarnated angel and his
sister lover. Beautifully drawn, but the number of characters exponentially
increases as the story progresses, and the plot becomes a bit hard to follow.
HERE
IS A REVIEW of the first 3 vol. |

Angel Wars, by H. Sanazaki, 10
vol. finished, 1990 Angels, Drama, Shounen Ai Misinterpretation
of Christianity, oh well. Read for this one amazing fallen angel: When as
an Angle of Light, he was deceived by other angels, blinded by jealousy,
and raped by Lucifer. Eventually he became a demon, then was tortured, cursed,
and made into a puppet to mock God. But Lucifer ends up falling in love
with him... Well, the ending was anti-climatic. |

Ao no Fuinn (thanks, Aquarius!),
by Chie Shinohara, 11 vol. finished 1994. Fantasy, Romance Nudity and dismemberment seem to be a common theme to this story.
Then again, the mangaka is very talented at the aesthetics of the human
body. In this story, a young girl discovers that she is the leader of a
demon clan, but falls in love with her hunter. The plot is a bit simple
and childish. |

Bakuretzu Hunters, by Satoru Akahori
& Rei Omishi, 10 vol. Adventure, Comedy, Magic
Like the anime, BH is a collection of the adventures of
the sorcerer hunters. The stories are not the same as those in the anime
(some are similar), but they are equally as good. In the manga Maron looks
much more masculine (relatively), and Carrot turns into different monsters
each time he transforms. |

BASARA, by Yumi Tamura, 21 vol.
Adventure, Epic, Romance In
the future Japan has became a wasteland under dictatorship. A young girl
leads the rebellion army, but who does she fall in love with? This is an
amazing story because despite the extensive cast of characters, the plot
moves very quickly, and each individual character is unique. Intelligence
and wits are emphasized as well as courage, liberation, and self realization.
The illustration of realistic human behavior can be a bit disturbing: seeing
a dictator king fallen to a beggar, seeing the evil bad guys succeed, and
seeing the heroine miscarriage.... *sigh* |

Blade of the Immortal, by Hiroaki
Samura, 7 vol. Action, Sword Ideology, Revenge
In ancient Japan, a girl seeks revenge for her father's
death along side a cynical bodyguard who cannot die. Drawn mostly in pencil,
the artwork is unbelievable in its presentation of motion. The antagonists
are often the heroes as they question the corruption of tradition and social
order. This series is available in English by Dark Horse Comics, but they
are very slow in releases, not to mention expensive, and the editing cuts
out some of the original story. Check out this GREAT
SITE for more information. |

Chimaera, by Judal, 3 vol. Fantasy
Four high school students with psychic powers encounters
strange beings from the underworld. The story starts out very fascinating,
with implications of shounen ai and suspense, but it kind of fell apart
toward the 3rd volume and many issues remain, not unsolved, but forgotten.
I THINK the story is still going... |
 |
CLOVER, by CLAMP, 2 vol. Action,
Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi Another
CLAMP tragedy, but it's very different from their usual glamourous layout.
Perhaps an attempt at aesthetics through brevity and space? The result is
a breakthrough for their narrative style. |

De Brand Koning, by Su-Lan Yo,
11 vol. finished 1997. Reincarnation, Romance Part
II of the Seven Mirror's Stories. (Man, is she really going to do seven
series, one for each mirror?) A little slow in the beginning, but it eventually
turns into a beautifully haunting love story (as the story finally shifts
its focus away from the annoying main female character.) The drawing is
very beautiful, a major improvement from Part I of the series, but the plot
is a little weak. By a Taiwanese artist, the story is refreshing from Japanese
manga due to its Chinese philosophy, but in comparison to Chinese literature,
the it's not very original. |

Destiny Series, by Kana Takagi,
7 vol. Comedy, Reincarnation, Shounen Ai For
300 years, a knight searched for the reincarnation of his beloved princess.
He finally found her in a Japanese high school. Dilemma: She is now a MAN!!
I don't know who deserves more sympathy
But the knight is certainly
VERY persistent! The art is okay, and the story becomes redundant. But it's
so funny to see the princess desperately assert the fact that she.. he is
a man, and failing, especially when all his classmates are so supportive
of the knight. |

Duke In Black, by Satosumi Takaguchi,
4 vol. finished 1992. Drama A drama
about the Hollywood social scene in the early 1900s: drugs, fame, sex, glamour,
and the tragedy of human nature. The art is okay. |

Egoist, by various artists, anthology,
published monthly. Yaoi There
are many attempts to explain this yaoi phenomenon so popular in Japan,
but the debate is still on. Is it feminism? Eroticism? Or just perversion?
This anthology series is better than most others because it is more story
oriented, and for the most part it has stayed away from child pornography.
The selection of artwork showcased in this magazine is also of better quality.
Selected MANGA SCANS are available for one short story that
I think has much artistic merit. |

Elementalors, by Takeshi Okazaki,
4 vol. Action, Fantasy In
the future, angels of the elements interact in warfare. A young, weak, boy
turns out to be their destined leader, the most powerful angel, but can
he handle his power, and live up to his fate? |
