Sailor Moon, by Naoko Takeuchi,
18 vol. finished 1997. Shoujo Fantasy Good
part: character development, and layout. Bad part: all sailors look exactly
alike, stories become mundane. However, I guess there are some nostalgic
value to this series, because for many girls, this was their first introduction
into manga. The anime shown in America is a disaster. If you want to see
the REAL version, get the original Japanese ones. They do a good job of
following the actual manga. |

Seven Mirrors' Stories Part I,
by Su-Lan Yo, 4 vol. finished 1991. Reincarnation, Romance Although the art needs some improvement, this series contains a
very unique and tragic story of fate and reincarnation. The Chinese philosophical
perspective is a change from the Japanese mangas, and also the story wasn't
that original, it was different from what you would usually see in manga
stores. Plot: A mirror that sealed the spirit of an angry princess was broken,
which resulted a series of murder and revelations. |

Shadow of the Moon, by Wei-Chung
Lu, 2 vol. Action, Mature Content Lots
of prostitutes and sexually perverse men in this story. Hee. The sequel
is out, and supposedly it's even more liberal. The art style is more Western,
but the artist is very good at the flow of layout and the sequencing of
the cells. |

Tokyo Angel Bodyguard (aka Tokyo Crazy Paradise), by Yoshiki Nakamura, 5 vol. Action, Comedy, Romance What do you do when you owe your nemesis an infinite amount of
money? What should you do when that nemesis knows your biggest secret? And
what can you do when that nemesis really likes you but you just don't know?
This is a very cute and lively story about very ABLE high school (*sigh*
why didn't I have an exciting life in high school?) students in Neo-Tokyo,
where law and order no longer exist. Translations are available on the Internet.
Look for them on the Anime Turnpike,
Section "T". |

Tokyo Babylon, by CLAMP. 7 vol.
finished, 19 Philosophical, Urban Mystery An
urban fairy-tale. Collection of supernatural stories that examines the tragedies
of humanity through the eyes of an innocent boy. His lost of innocence is
one of the trademarks of CLAMP reality. |

Twin Signal, by Sachi Oshimizu,
9 vol. Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi At
first I thought this was going to be silly, but it becomes more interesting
as it light-heartedly takes on the issue of (what else?) the consciousness
of artificial intelligence and the definition of life. But
why are
there SO MANY robots!!?? I'm getting dizzy....
Heh heh, here are some of my favorite moments from
Twin Signal. |

X, by CLAMP, 10 vol. Adventure,
Apocalypse, Intrigue Now the
stage is set between the Dragons of Heaven and the Dragons of Earth, I can't
wait to see how CLAMP will manipulate the plot. |

Yakumo Tatsu, by Natsumi Itsuki,
8 vol. Action, Magic Fantasy A
nice (too nice) college student befriends a Syaman (spirit channeler), and
gets involved in plots including the supernatural. The Syaman is on a quest
to collect seven(right?) magical swords that will ensure the peace of Japan.
And the mundane college student, as we slowly find out, will play a crucial
part in this endeavor. Interesting stories that are actually quite frightening
at times. Selected SCANS from the early parts of the series. |
