Misato reporting ^_^ The rating system is based on a FIVE system. 5 stars mean "piece of art" and 1 star means "bad investment."

FAKE, by Ellie Mamahara, 1 vol. complete. Drama Ellie is always great with giving a 3D-ness to her antagonists. They may be nasty, arrogant, and rude, but beyond that is so much pain that you just can't help but love them!
Fire Moon, by Mari Hirai, 2 vol. Magic, Shounen Ai?, Romance Romance: An androgynous cat-spirit wants to bear the child of his master. Problem: The master won't return his feelings, due to a traumatized childhood, yet is possessive of him. More problem: Another cat-spirit is DYING to make a woman out of him. In terms of style, this manga is a tight and complex narrative with detailed art. The layout might need some improvement, since Hirai-san packs way too much story into too little space, but the plot is well developed.
Fushigi Yuugi, by Watase Yuu,
18 vol. finished 1996. Adventure, Fantasy, Romance Truthfully, I refuse to acknowledge the volumes after book 15. Not a bad story, thanks to the antagonists Yui and Nakago. But the repressed soft-porn undertones are just done in bad taste. The anime follows the manga closely, however, the manga deals more with the inner psychological conflicts of Miaka concerning school an her oppressive mother.
Hareluya II "BOY", by Haruto Umezawa, 26 vol. Action, Comedy, Friendship A high school rebel out to conquer the world with his friends. This is a hilarious story of a group of heroic delinquents out to test all limits of life and society. The mangaka used to be an assistant to the artist of City Hunter, but the art style is quite different. I love it when Hibino, the main character, whips out all these gadgets from under the back of his coat.. bats, nets, frying pans, hot pots, and even sea food!! By the way, the anime was released just last year.
Hareluya, by Haruto Umezawa, 1 vol. complete. Action, Comedy The original idea that led to the popular HB2. God has decided to destroy the world because (pardon the confusion of Eastern/Western thoughts) his son, who will succeed him, is a lazy, underachieving, playboy who doesn't give a damn about anything but slutty women. So he decides to cast his son to earth and tests him before actually ending the human race.
J1 & J2, by Ellie Mamahara, 2 vol. finished. Action, Drama, Sci-Fi One of her weaker series, the art and plot are both a little weak. In a world of artificial intelligence, the only human has been discovered
Jikembo of Shounen Komidachi, by ... Action, Adventure, Comedy, Mystery Depending on the story, some are GREAT but some are a bit illogical. Nonetheless, this series is one of the most popular series in Japan because it is not only entertaining, but it also takes a humane and mature look at life.
Magic, by Reiko Shimizu, 1 vol. complete 1993. Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi Collection of 2 short stories. Not Reiko's best, but the unexpected plot twists are certainly entertaining.
Magical Knights Rayearth I & II, by CLAMP, 3 vol. in each series complete. Action, Fantasy, RPGI have mixed feelings about this series because of many likes and dislikes. I know CLAMP has a big ego, but com'on! The ending was in bad taste. The first series was simple, generic, but well drawn. The sequel was more complex, but clustering too many characters into the story made it shallow and choppy.
Mirage of Blaze, by Shoko Hamada
& Mizuna Kuwabara, 2 vol. Action, Reincarnation Warring factions from ancient Japan are ready for another battle in the present, and two best friends are caught on opposite sides of this battle between spirits. So far the story is still establishing the setting, but it shows potential.
Mouryoukiden, by Tamayo Akiyama
(CLAMP), 3 vol. finished 1995 Drama, Fantasy A too complicated story packed into too little space. The story is very CLAMP, hidden agendas and intentions, along with beautiful drawing and fascinating characters. However, the first time I read it I had no idea what the hell was going on. It took a few readings.
Narcissus Black Series, by Kazuna Uchida, 8 vol. finished, 1995. Apocalypse, Fantasy, Shounen Ai Uchida-san seems to be making the argument that narcissism is the true evil. In this story, God, Death, and Victory are in a battle of Desire versus Salvation. But can Death be a Narcissist as he gradually realizes his love for another human? Adult content: Wow, aren't those homosexual sex scenes a bit explicit for commercial publication? Definitely not for the religiously courteous. Also, for some reason, the mangaka cannot draw profiles...
New Vampire Princess Miyu, by
Narumi kakinouchi, 5 vol. finished 1993. Fantasy Miyu, the guardian of the underworld, battles Western demons with her loyal servant, Larva. It's so cute, the mangaka (there are two, actually,) call Miyu their daughter. She a little spoiled, a bit capricious, and makes many mistakes.
Please Save My Earth, by Saki Hiwatari, 21 vol. finished 1994. Action, Fantasy, Intrigue, Romance One of the MOST HAUNTING narratives EVER. I laughed and cried from volume one to 21. It deals with so much hate, jealousy, resentment, and pain, yet it comes out with a pure heart. Through this complex network of human emotions, the artist takes the story to an existential level. The OVA only showed one side of the story... there are much, much more.
Ran Han Sha, by Mayu Ishidou, 4 vol. finished 1994. Drama, Shounen Ai A more gentle version of ZetsuAi Character development is not as consistent, though.
RG Veda, by CLAMP, 10 vol. finished,
199?. Action, Fantasy, Mystery, Revenge An earlier work by CLAMP, and, without a doubt, one of their best. As a prophecy gradually becomes fulfilled, we begin to shift our mental construction of the situation, and question the true intentions of the characters. This story has layers and layers of plot, yet the narrative maintains a solid unity.
Ruroni Kenshin, by Nobuhiro Watsuki, 16 vol. Action, Adventure, Friendship Hee, I love it that this feared number-one-assassin also cooks, cleans, and runs errands for his land-lady. Well, service for rent, I guess ^_~ |
