The Legends and Myths of Hawaii

by His Hawaiian Majesty Kalakaua

King David Kalakaua lived 1836-1890; he ruled with sympathy and understanding, and had deep respect for traditional knowledge, initiating the renaissance of Hawaiian culture that continues to this day.

"His book is an early and significant contribution to the preservation of Hawaiian culture. Here is a rich collection of Hawaiian loreoriginal edition1888." This work is a combination of stories about historical incidents and legends. I found this to be an exciting gift given me by a fellow native islander after she'd found references to members of my maternal ancestry among the legends.

by Kiana Davenport

The author is of Hawaiian/Anglo-American descent who has written three prior novels. 1992-93 Fiction Fellow at Radcliffe's Bunting Institute; received 1992 Fiction Grant from National Endowment for Arts; lives in Boston and Hawai'i.

Ms. Davenport brings us a fascinating fictional story that follows the generations of a Hawaiian family from the days of sovereign Hawai'i to present day. She weaves a wonderful story in among some actual occurences in the history of the islands, embellishing with poetic license. It at times brought laughter to my lips, as well as pain in my heart and tears to my eyes.

He shattered his right femur in a motorcycle accident, and recovered to join his team and win the NCAA Gymnastics Championships. He traveled around the world studying various martial arts and spiritual traditions. He taught at Oberlin College for several years, where he later wrote Way of the Peaceful Warrior, followed by "Sacred Journey". Today he not only continues to write, but also lectures, sharing his spiritual teachings worldwide. You can visit his website at http://www.danmillman.com/

"Sacred Journey, as I wrote in the preface, is a novel. ... The book is primarily fiction leading to a deeper understanding of the essence of our human evolution (the Tower of Seven Levels) and of the huna model of the 'three selves'." It may be a book of fiction, however, what is covered of Huna will be of interest to many. The story is set in Hawai'i, mostly on the island of Molokai.
