Let's Speak Hawaiian
by Dorothy M. Kahananui, Alberta P. Anthony
Paperback
"A very good book to work with, February 6, 2001. A reader from Bodega Bay, CA USA
This is a first-rate book. I certainly recommend it as a good place to start for anyone interested in keeping this beautiful language alive (and it is also is a good point of departure for anyone interested in Polynesian languages in general.) Each lesson begins with a section of sentences that introduce new grammatical patterns as well as new vocabulary, and at the end of each lesson each pattern and each usage is explained very thoroughly. The lessons progress from each one to the next very smoothly. Many of the exercises and drills are clearly intended to be done in a classroom setting, but it isn't too difficult to adapt them to home use."

Wonderful Food History
This book is not just thoroughly researched, but is very entertainingly written. For those of us who have been eating Local Food for years, but never really inquiring why we love it so, here is the unraveling of many a mystery. Our love of rice can be seen as a triumph of climate and culture, but the entire crack seed phenomenon is also excellently explored by an adventurous and appreciative non-Local.
Thank you, Rachel Laudan, for opening up our history and unique culinary explorations.

The Hawaiian Steel Guitar and Its Great Hawaiian Musicians
by Lorene Ruymar (Compiler)
Paperback - 216 pages (September 1996); Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation; ISBN: 1574240218; Dimensions (in inches): 0.57 x 12.03 x 9.06
"Customer Comments: [email protected] from San Francisco, CA USA, 01/05/98
An excellent source of information on Hawaiian steel guitar. Sponsored by the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association, The Hawaiian Steel Guitar (and its great Hawaiian Musicians), edited and compiled by Lorene Ruymar, stands as the ultimate reference work for people interested in the Hawaiian steel guitar, much in the same way as Bob Brozman's "The History and Artistry of National Resonator Instruments". In this book Lorene Ruymar has condensed the 100 year history of this quintessential Hawaiian instrument into 200 pages. Packed with photographs, drawings and reprints of various types, this book gives you a lot of information. Contributions are included from over 70 different people, including Jerry Byrd, Bob Brozman, Mike Perlowin, and many others.
There are seven chapters in this book, with each chapter containing several articles by various authors. Chapter 1 discusses the origin of the steel guitar. Chapter 2 documents the steel guitar's spread throughout the world, from Sweden to Tonga, with special mention of the steel guitar's acceptance into other forms of American music such as blues and country music. Chapter 3 discusses the various mainland schools, cultural influences and instruction methods. Chapter 4 is devoted to short biographies of many steel guitarists around the world. Chapter 5 covers the physical development of the steel guitar, including acoustic Hawaiian guitars, resonator guitars, lap steels, table steels, and pedal steel guitars. This chapter contains many photographs of various steel guitar models, both acoustic and electric. Chapter 6 discusses the many playing techniques developed over the years, and includes a very complete list of common steel guitar tunings. Chapter 7 is all about the Hawaiian guitar today.
This is a wonderful resource and good reading for the steel guitar fan. You can't miss the cover, with a painting of Sol Ho'opi'i holding a National tricone guitar."

"Having stumbled my way through the south seas for years with my usual seat-of-the-pants planning I found along the way Lenore Horowitzs' brilliant Underground Guide to Kauai. For the first time in my life I took the advice of an author of a travel guide and began my journey through the island magic of Kauai 2 months before I was even packed. Mrs. Horowitz and her family painted a wonderous mental picture of the flora, fuana, people and activities as well as the spirit that pervades every inch of this island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The lessons learned by the Horowitz Family prevented me from making some usual tourist mistakes of a poorly planned vacation. Before arriving on my journey I already knew which beaches I wanted to explore, which restaurants my taste buds yearned for and the usual and the not-so-usual activities that a tourist should take advantage of. My visit was truly planned and my anticipation was incredible waiting to experience Kauai. Upon our arrival my wife and I clutched tightly our already worn copy of the Underground Guide. Shortly we found ourselves exploring the island in our rental car and more than once we could be seen laughling madly as we missed a landmark for the hiddenbeaches pointed out to us by the Horowitz Family. Landmarks were precisely written out for us but in our zeel we cruised by a few mile markers such as a particular General Store, a worn out old barn or our favorite : "the barbed wire fence" clue. We explored where the Horowitz's previously discovered and not once was I disappointed. We were perfectly prepared for the incredible beauty of the island and it's hidden treasures thanks to the Horowitz perspective. The restaurants which we visited as listed in the Underground Guide proved to be wonderful. Especially when keen-eyed waiters spied our tattered copy of the Guide. More often than not our service was second to none. We followed the Horowitz family recommendations from everything including where to get the best deal on rental gear to the most delicious art galleries. The Underground Guide is written from the heart and years of experience of a family who has a love affair with Kauai. Because of our incredible experience on the island my wife and I are moving to Kauai in May following our son's graduation from high school. We are moving to Hanalei. Our dog-eared copy of the Underground Guide will be proudly displayed on the bookshelf of our little grass shack. We're hoping one day to meet the Horowitz Family to personally thank them for sharing their insights. Mrs. Horowitz you can find us at Bubba's Burgers in Hanalei or on the golden shores of Poipu Beach. You'll know us by the tattered remains of your delightful book in our beach bag. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title."

A Sacred Journey-What else can I say?
The Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior is a most private book for me but I sense it would be for many who are guided to it by whatever means. I reclaimed my spirit, several friendships and my faith in teachers and teachings. I have bought this book for many people because I would not, curiously enough, trust even my closest friend with the copy that came to me through mysterious circumstance.
